Trojans get back to The Brickyard

Friday's scrimmage at the Brickyard will be mostly used as a learning tool for North Hall football coach Bob Christmas. The Trojans coach liked the idea that he'll have plenty of quality film to evaluate against Class AAAAA's Roswell, which has been a top-tier Class AAAAA program in recent seasons, even though it did result in a 21-19 loss.

Mongero aims to aid Czech baseball

North Hall High baseball coach Trent Mongero is on a mission to send a great big Christmas present to the Czech Republic. He's hoping to send huge packages loaded down with baseball and softball equipment to the people in Hluboka, where he recently visited on a 12-day trip to share his faith and love of baseball through an organization called Purpose Driven Baseball.

Area teams ranked in preseason polls

Two volleyball teams from Area 7-AAA have been ranked in the top-10 of the first gasports.com coaches poll of the season. Flowery Branch enters the season ranked No. 6, while West Hall is ranked No. 9. In softball, defending Class AA champion Buford begins the year as the preseason No. 1, while Jefferson, who also reached the state tournament in 2007, enters the year ranked No. 9 in Class AA.

Gainesville graduate signs with Livingstone

Jeromy Yarbrough, a 2007 graduate of Gainesville High, signed a scholarship on July 3 to play football at Division II Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. After splitting time between defensive tackle and linebacker with the Red Elephants, the 5-foot-9, 240-pound Yarbough will primarily play middle linebacker at Livingstone.

Realignment adds intrigue for area basketball teams

Realignment has made for some intriguing region title races for the 2014-15 basketball season.
In Region 8-AAAA especially, the competition should be fierce. The Johnson boys and Chestatee girls are the defending region champions, but both face an infusion of top-level contenders.
The Buford boys were 7-AAA champs last season, and the Buford and North Hall girls were the top two 7-AAA teams in the 2013-14 regular season. All three of those programs are now a part of Region 8-AAAA.
