Flowery Branch's Caleb Murphy scored 18 points in a 66-33, season-opening win against East Jackson on Tuesday. Brannon Clark had 13 points for the Falcons and Blake Coxworth added 12 points.

High School Scoreboard: Lakeview Academy's Wright Allen finishes 10th at state cross country meet

Lakeview Academy's Wright Allen became the third runner in the team's history to finish in the top ten at state. He placed 10th out of 116 runners with a time of 18:09. Lakeview's boys finished eighth overall in Carrollton Friday with an average time of 18:59.

Buford tops Walnut Grove 2-0, move on to softball finals in Class AAAAA

Logan Caymol pitched a 12-strikeout shutout for Buford in a 2-0 win against Walnut Grove, advancing to the Class AAAAA state championship series on Friday in Columbus. With the win, the Lady Wolves face Harris County, looking for their 10th straight state championship.

Jacob Poston led Dawson County's boys to a team Region 7-AAA cross country title with a time of 15 minutes, 33 seconds on Thursday at Unicoi State Park in Helen.

Chestatee's Ivan Martin finished fourth with a time of 16 minutes, 20.1 seconds at the Region 7-AAAA Championship meet, leading his team to a third-place spot Wednesday at Unicoi State Park in Helen. With the top four finish, Chestatee earned a spot to the state championship next week at Carrollton. White County's boys finished fourth overall.

Football Player of the Week: Chestatee LB Nick Beard

When Chestatee's Nick Beard was sprinting into the end zone for a defensive go-ahead score late in Friday's win against White County, his mind was racing a mile a minute. It's the kind of dream scenario for a battle-tested linebacker getting to score a pivotal touchdown that anyone his age grows up thinking about. Beard was at the right place at the right time to be the hero of the game.
