Lanierland: Smith scores 46, War Eagles win

OAKWOOD - Parker Smith came into Saturday night's game hoping to prove that the Chestatee High basketball team could play with anybody.

After the game, he felt like the War Eagles' 91-77 victory against West Hall in the opening round of the Jackson EMC Lanierland Basketball Tournament quieted a lot of doubters.

State playoffs: Trojans' dream season ends

ATLANTA - A teary locker room momentarily overshadowed a season's worth of accomplishments for North Hall following a 42-21 loss to Cairo in the Class AAA semifinals Saturday at the Georgia Dome. The loss brought an end to a season of firsts in school history, most notably the first appearance playing in the state semifinals and single-season record 13 wins.

The Trojans (13-1) were hoping for a shot at their first football state title in school history. But the dazzling speed of the Syrupmakers (13-1) brought a sudden end to those dreams with 35 third quarter points.

Lanierland: Lady Vikings shut down Chestatee

OAKWOOD - East Hall senior forward Sada Wheeler led the third-seeded Lady Vikings to a 46-24 win against Chestatee with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists in the opening round of the 48th annual Jackson EMC Lanierland Basketball Tournament on Saturday night.

State playoffs: Buford faces Lovett in Class AA title game

ATLANTA - Buford fullback Tyler King put his team's game plan for its Class AA semifinal game against Dublin in the simplest of terms afterwards.

"We knew we had to hit them in the mouth," the senior said, figuratively of course.

Lanierland: Gainesville holds off Johnson

Led by Jaymee Carnes' 27 points, Gainesville made it through the first round of the Jackson EMC Lanierland Basketball Tournament beating Johnson 53-43 Saturday night. Carnes came up big down the stretch, scoring 11 in the fourth quarter, while grabbing three defensive rebounds and one offensive rebound.

Despite a sluggish start by the Lady Red Elephants, and a beginning of the game in which Johnson made four of its first five shots, Gainesville went into halftime with a four-point lead.

Lanierland: Falcons pull away in third

OAKWOOD - Flowery Branch platooned and pressed their way to a win.

Thanks to a full-court 1-2-2 trapping press, the ability to sub in five at a time, and a third quarter in which they scored 27 points, the top-seeded Falcons beat Gainesville 82-63 on Saturday night in the first round of the Jackson EMC Lanierland Basketball Tournament.

ATLANTA - Deron Furr scored on a 3-yard game-winning touchdown run to cap a fourth-quarter comeback that lifted Carver-Columbus to a 26-24 victory over Chamblee in the Class AAA state semifinals Friday.

Lanierland: Wise's return spurs East Hall to victory

OAKWOOD - East Hall high senior Ken Wise couldn't wait to get back out on the basketball court. Wise, who suffered a severe knee injury during the preseason, hit the court for the first time this season and helped lead the Vikings to an 84-68 victory against Johnson on Friday night in the opening round of the 48th annual Lanierland Basketball Tournament.

Dome Day: Wolves ready for early kickoff

BUFORD - T.J. Pridemore admitted that he has a hard time with staying up too late and having to get up early.

Then why is Buford's senior linebacker actually excited about getting up at 5 this morning after having gone to bed around 8 p.m. the night before? Because he and the rest of the Wolves (13-0) will be playing in the Class AA semifinals against Dublin (11-2) in the Georgia Dome at 9 a.m. today.

Uhaa commits to Paladins

Tersoo Uhaa had no doubt that the day would come. The senior at Riverside Military Academy has stated that a career in the NFL is his ultimate athletic goal. Wednesday, after a standout prep career, he committed to make the next step.

Uhaa, a 5-foot-9, 200-pound running back and linebacker, has accepted a scholarship offer from Furman University and verbally committed to play for the Division I-AA Paladins next fall.

It can be hard for a season to parallel expectations going into the season. There are often times too many unexpected variables, such as injuries, intersquad discontent and player misconduct, that can sideline a season with previously high expectations.

North Hall football coach Bob Christmas didn't want to turn a blind-eye to the possibility of adversity to an otherwise talented team when the season began.
