Prep wrestling: Eagles shine on first day of state meet

GAINESVILLE - Despite considering themselves a young and inexperienced team, the Riverside Military Academy wrestlers proved to the rest of the Georgia Independent Schools that they are indeed still a force to be reckoned with.

The Eagles advanced nine wrestlers to the quarterfinals of the GISA State Wrestling Tournament on Friday night at Riverside.

GAINESVILLE - With only two seniors on a Riverside Military Academy roster dominated by underclassmen, a sixth straight state championship was probably too much to ask for. So, it's probably just as well that the team scoring element was removed from this year's Georgia Independent Schools Association traditional wrestling tournament.

Riverside has set the bar for GISA wrestling excellence since 2003, winning five consecutive state championships, but in a transition year, the Eagles would not have been able to keep pace with Windsor Academy, which brought home six individual titles Saturday and also recently won the GISA state duals.
