Undefeated after four rounds in the duals portion of the Hall County Championships on Saturday, Flowery Branch needed a win over Chestatee to secure its second straight team title.
With the score tied 6-6, the Falcons' 152-pound Hall County individual champion Ben Yu won by pin, beginning a stretch in which Flowery Branch won six of the next seven matches to beat Chestatee 50-13 and defend their Hall County team championship.
Flowery Branch High's wrestling team certainly dominated the lightweight divisions in the individual matches of the Hall County championships. Whether that translates into a repeat team title for the Falcons will be determined today at East Hall.
In a year in which three teams reached the second round of the Class AAA state playoffs, two reached the quarterfinals and one reached the state title game, Region 7-AAA can now officially be called one of the top football regions in Class AAA.
The East Hall boys basketball team fell in the finals of the Playground Classic Holiday basketball tournament 65-58 against Mandeville High (La.) on Tuesday night in Fort Walton Beach, Fla. Charles Perry led the Vikings (6-4) in scoring with 12 points. Dustin Duckworth and Kymmon Woods each finished with 11 for East Hall. Woods and Duckworth were named to the All-Tournament team. East Hall plays host to Johnson on Jan. 13.

For the first time in school history, Dawson County's boys and girls golf teams swept the Region 7-AAA championships on Tuesday at Crystal Falls Golf Course in Dawsonville. The Tigers and Lady Tigers advance to the state tournament on May 18.
With a large lead quickly dwindling, Lumpkin County coach Dustin Allen went with his ace Cody Waters earlier than he had hoped Tuesday against East Hall. The right-handed senior responded with 5 2/3 innings of steady work in long-relief duty, allowed only one run and led the Indians (14-8, 11-5 Region 7-AAA) to an 11-6 win in Gainesville.
