Mongero aims to aid Czech baseball

North Hall High baseball coach Trent Mongero is on a mission to send a great big Christmas present to the Czech Republic. He's hoping to send huge packages loaded down with baseball and softball equipment to the people in Hluboka, where he recently visited on a 12-day trip to share his faith and love of baseball through an organization called Purpose Driven Baseball.

Area teams ranked in preseason polls

Two volleyball teams from Area 7-AAA have been ranked in the top-10 of the first gasports.com coaches poll of the season. Flowery Branch enters the season ranked No. 6, while West Hall is ranked No. 9. In softball, defending Class AA champion Buford begins the year as the preseason No. 1, while Jefferson, who also reached the state tournament in 2007, enters the year ranked No. 9 in Class AA.

Jeromy Yarbrough, a 2007 graduate of Gainesville High, signed a scholarship on July 3 to play football at Division II Livingstone College in Salisbury, N.C. After splitting time between defensive tackle and linebacker with the Red Elephants, the 5-foot-9, 240-pound Yarbough will primarily play middle linebacker at Livingstone.

Former Lumpkin coach McCrary to be inducted into wrestling Hall of Fame

John McCrary compiled a 236-94-6 record during his 20-year career as head coach of the Lumpkin County High wrestling program from 1986-2006. His wrestlers won seven individual state titles during that time, including a pair of two-time state champions, and he led the team to a state-runner up finish in 2001.
