Basketball practice starts this week

The high school basketball season is still weeks away, but teams across the area open practice this week. Many boys programs will be without key players until the conclusion of football season, but that doesn't stop the anticipation for the coming season.

Once again, I'm reminded that college football desperately needs an early signing period. It's gotten to the point where high school athletes have what appears to be total control in the process when it should be the other way around. Huge college programs are at the mercy of 17- and 18-year-olds that can change their minds as quickly as they send a text message.

The Flowery Branch boys and girls cross country teams each won the Last Chance Invitational on Saturday in Carrollton. David Farist won the boys race for Flowery Branch with a time of 16 minutes, 57 seconds. Flowery Branch senior Kiara Woods won the girls race (19:25).
