Prep baseball: Trojans recover from loss with drubbing of East Hall

GAINESVILLE - The best thing North Hall's baseball team has going right now is a short memory.

The Trojans (6-2, 3-1 Region 7-AAA) promptly rebounded from Monday's 13-0 loss to Gainesville, with a 10-0 shutout of East Hall on Thursday night at the East Hall Park.

Prep soccer: Gainesville girls down Chesatee in penalty kicks

GAINESVILLE - Lady Red Elephants goalkeeper Evelyn Murray has a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right leg.

The Gainesville (8-3, 5-1) senior, whose been battling through torn ACLs since her sophomore year, overcame an injury that greatly hinders her range of motion to make a diving stop going to her left on a penalty kick and ensure her team a 5-2 win over Chestatee in penalty kicks on Thursday night at City Park.

GAINESVILLE - It would be entirely appropriate to say that Gainesville High's baseball team is in the midst of a playoff caliber stretch of the Region 7-AAA schedule. The Red Elephants drew the luck of the draw having to play all three fellow playoff qualifiers from last season - Flowery Branch, North Hall and Lumpkin County - consecutively.

Prep scoreboard: Flowery Branch baseball stays unbeaten

The Flowery Branch High baseball team remained perfect on the season with a 14-10 win against East Hall on Monday night at the Hog Mountain Sports Complex in South Hall. The Falcons (7-0, 3-0 Region 7-AAA) finished the game with nine hits, highlighted by eight runs and six hits in the sixth inning. Each team had seven errors in the game.

One of my all-time favorite lines in the coach-speak library is "it doesn't matter how you start, it's how you finish." That line is normally thrown out when a team is struggling early on in the season, and the coach is hoping for some sort of ray of light to shine on his team.

Prep track: North Hall's Long breaks school record

North Hall senior Nick Long broke a 22-year-old school record Saturday at the Coaches' Invitational track meet on the campus of Georgia Tech in Atlanta. With a time of 4:26.55 in the 1,600 meter run, Long placed fifth among 30 competitors.

Prep baseball: Henry leads Falcons over Gainesville

GAINESVILLE - The baseball season is still young, but Flowery Branch High is certainly asserting itself as a contender early on.

The Falcons (6-0, 2-0 Region 7-AAA) won at Ivey-Watson Field for only the second time in school history with a 5-1 victory over Gainesville on Friday night. The last time Flowery Branch won at Ivey-Watson was during its region championship run in 2005.

Gainesville High senior Spencer Ralston earned second place, behind a strong third-round 67, at the Georgia Junior Championship on Wednesday in Augusta. Ralston, the Class AAAAA Golfer of the Year, finished the 54-hole, three-day outing with a total score of 8-under (208).
