GAINESVILLE - The Chestatee Lady War Eagles overcame an 11-point halftime deficit and escaped the first round of the Region 7-AAA tournament with 51-50 win over the Johnson Lady Knights on Monday at North Hall.

Chestatee (12-12), which lost in overtime the last time it faced the Lady Knights, got off to a sluggish start, scoring only six points in the first quarter and entering halftime down 26-15. Johnson (4-19, 3-9 7-AAA) used a 9-2 run late in the second quarter to take the lead, after also starting out slow with only 10 first-quarter points.

Prep wrestling: Eagles shine on first day of state meet

GAINESVILLE - Despite considering themselves a young and inexperienced team, the Riverside Military Academy wrestlers proved to the rest of the Georgia Independent Schools that they are indeed still a force to be reckoned with.

The Eagles advanced nine wrestlers to the quarterfinals of the GISA State Wrestling Tournament on Friday night at Riverside.

Prep wrestling: Riverside aiming for sixth title

GAINESVILLE - The pressure is there. Just ask veteran Riverside Military Academy wrestlers like Bill Dearybury and Tersoo Uhaa who have been a part of previous Eagles state championship teams.

Two Eagles win state titles

GAINESVILLE - With only two seniors on a Riverside Military Academy roster dominated by underclassmen, a sixth straight state championship was probably too much to ask for. So, it's probably just as well that the team scoring element was removed from this year's Georgia Independent Schools Association traditional wrestling tournament.

Riverside has set the bar for GISA wrestling excellence since 2003, winning five consecutive state championships, but in a transition year, the Eagles would not have been able to keep pace with Windsor Academy, which brought home six individual titles Saturday and also recently won the GISA state duals.
