FLOWERY BRANCH - The already close race for the Region 7-AAA baseball title just got tighter.

Faced with stopping the hottest team in the region - the Gainesville Red Elephants - Cody Ackerman and the Flowery Branch Falcons showed no signs of fear and ended Gainesville's 10-game winning streak to the tune of a 9-1 victory on Friday at Hog Mountain Sports Complex.

Prep baseball: Dragons maintain top spot in 8-A

Jefferson's Jed Gurley isn't used to being the center of attention, but after the game the Dragons' No. 9 hitter had Friday night, it would be hard to get overlooked.

Gurley, a senior, connected on his only home run of the season for Jefferson (11-3, 10-0 Region 8-A) and drove in six runs as part of a 14-2 win over Lakeview Academy (10-6, 7-2) in Gainesville. He finished the game 3-for-3 with a fifth-inning RBI double and reached base in all five at bats.

West Hall's Turner finalist for award

West Hall's Adam Turner was among 20 Georgia high school students named on April 5 as a finalist for the Vincent J. Dooley Award.The awards are given to one male and female senior who exemplifiy teamwork, character and citizenship in their community. Each winner is awarded at $1,000 scholarship while each finalist is given $1,000 to present to the charity of their choice.
