Area wrestlers prepare for state traditonals

The very best of Georgia's wrestlers will come together one last time over the next three days.

Day one of the 2008-09 GHSA Traditional Wrestling Tournament, the final wrestling of the season, begins at 5:30 p.m. today at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth. It continues at 8 a.m. Friday and 10 a.m. Saturday.

Chestatee suffers first round upset against West Forsyth

OAKWOOD One scoring spurt was the difference in West Forsyth's 58-48 win against Chestatee in the first round of the Region 7-AAA tournament Tuesday at West Hall.A Lamar Brooks 3-pointer with four-minutes, 35 seconds remaining in the third quarter gave the War Eagles a 26-25 lead, their first of the game.

Vining named Region 8-A Coach of the Year

Two area coaches were named Coach of the Year in the Region 8-A All-Region team released Tuesday. Lakeview Academy's Seth Vining was honored as boys Coach of the Year while Commerce's Eddie McCurley was recognized as Girls Coach of the Year.

Gregg Hartsuff took out a screwdriver as he worked on a trophy in the bed of his truck, carefully putting the cup back together after disassembling it for the long drive down from Ann Arbor, Mich. It's a labor of love for the University of Michigan men's rowing coach, who has led his team to seven straight American Collegiate Rowing Association (ACRA) national championships, including four since the tournament moved to Gainesville.

Dawson County's Caldwell wins Class AAA girls golf championship

Dawson County's Madison Caldwell shot a 73 to win the Class AAA girls golf individual state title Monday at Horseshoe Bend in Roswell. Caldwell beat out second place finisher Clara Halsey of Sonoraville. The Dawson County girls finished seventh as a team with a score of 298. In addition to Caldwell's 73, Sydney Morgan shot a 103 and Hannah McConnell shot a 122 for the Lady Tigers. The Dawson County boys shot a 343 to finish seventh at the state tournament. David Ford led the way with an 81.
