Letter: Rebuilding Enota to preserve its garden should be school board’s focus

As a retired educator from Enota Multiple Intelligences Academy, I have followed very closely the discussions involving the proposed rebuilding of Enota. I have attended one school board meeting hoping to hear something encouraging, particularly concerning the outside learning garden on the campus. Unfortunately that did not happen.

Letter: Superintendent wrong in saying Enota’s learning can’t measure up

Although we have been encouraged to see the community support and media coverage of issues surrounding the building of the new Enota Multiple Intelligence Academy, we were highly concerned by comments made by Gainesville Schools Superintendent Dr. Wanda Creel in the article, "Enota brainstorming includes plan of construction delay for ideas to preserve garden," published Sunday in The Times.

Letter: Editorial incorrectly credited Jackson with creating Bank of U.S. he opposed

I enjoyed the thematic thrust of your editorial, "Worthy change for a 20" of April 17. I just, however, take issue with one observation you made about President Andrew Jackson. You wrote, "As president he created the Bank of the United States." The historical record will show he did not create the Bank of the U.S.

Letter: Students need learning option a garden offers

As a former Enota Elementary teacher and Gainesville resident having taught young children for 42 years, I know the value of hands-on, real life activities to enhance learning. I sought to instill awe and wonder for the natural world and strived to get my students outside to explore nature while teaching at Enota. I helped create garden plots for my students and enjoyed having access to the nearby woods where my class could explore.

Editorial: Stamping out support to those in need

While Hall County's jobless rate lingers below 5 percent and many prosper from a growing economy, we see reminders that it's never easy to be poor, even as government and nonprofit agencies work to keep the safety net pulled tight.

Letter: Forget fighting over bathrooms; focus on real victims of abuse

I'm writing in response to the glut of Facebook posts calling for parents to eschew Target bathrooms and praising North Carolina's HB2, which calls for people to use the bathroom that corresponds with the anatomical sex they were born with.

Letter: Educational value of garden at Enota should factor into plans

Recent research in the field of education emphasizes the importance of the "softer side" of our schools. Students behave better, focus better and remember more if they are relaxed and have chances during the day to enjoy music, art and, yes, recess.

Letter: I-985 exit plans need changing

Don't waste needed money to have the Exit 14 intersection of Interstate 985 come out on Martin Road. Please consider a more cost-efficient way to add this exit than into the homes of Martin Road.

Letter: Columnist tells only part of story on nuclear power

In his Wednesday column about the Public Service Commission and Georgia Power, Tom Crawford has done what most journalist do today - tell part of the story. I do not disagree with anything he says about the large cost overruns on Georgia Power's nuclear plants. However, his limited knowledge of the utility industry does not allow him to tell the whole story, only to berate the PSC and Georgia Power for what he feels is poor management.

Letter: School system should preserve Enota garden, not just pictures of it

Regarding The Times article Sunday, "Enota move grows concern over garden's placement:" With the full approval of the Gainesville Board of Education, an extensive, beautiful and educational garden has been built over the last eight years at Enota school. Now plans presented by the school administration propose the complete destruction of this garden.
