Letter: This election mimics future Orwell foresaw many years ago

Now that the electors have spoken, a version of the world depicted in George Orwell's "1984" is coming to pass. In "1984," published in 1949 in England, Orwell describes a society dominated by Big Brother, a dictator who controls the tiniest details of all citizens' lives while demanding virtual worship of their "beloved" ultimate leader. Orwell was far ahead of his time in many ways, including the dating of his dystopia: "1984" arrived 32 years late, in 2016, with Donald Trump in the role of Big Brother.

Letter: Public Service commissioner well-versed on nuclear power

Times reader Bruce Vandiver criticized Public Service Commissioner Tim Echols in his Dec. 16 letter, "Member of PSC didn't factor real human cost of nuclear power." He cited nuclear power plant accidents of 1986 Chernobyl in Russian, 2011 Fukushima in Japan and 1979 Three Mile Island as reasons for his assessment.

Letter: Electors should vote right away, face stiff penalties for switching

If we had a pure democracy, national laws and presidential elections would be dominated by a few mega cities. Rural areas would have almost no influence. We have a Senate and Electoral College to give at least a little influence to smaller states and rural areas. A concern is that people may be able to steal the election by intimidating the electors as the Democrats tried to do.

Letter: Don’t tell me to ‘move on’ from Trump family’s ideas

There are so many things wrong with a Trump family presidency, I don't know where to begin. I'll never get over hearing a president say the things he said on the "Bush" tape or brag about his right to skulk around backstage at a beauty contest or use the "f" word at a rally. I won't move on from that, and neither should you.

Letter: Facts on climate change refute letter denying reality of science

Wednesday's edition had a long letter from George C. Kaulbach of Cornelia attempting to show climate change is a hoax. I realize you editors need to fill space on the editorial page with something, but must you do it with letters that leave the reading public with the impression that all folks in North Georgia just came in from the turnip patch, or get their data from a recollection of the drought of 1999 in Cornelia?
