Guest column, Rep. Doug Collins: Separation of powers key to securing liberty

When I have the privilege of spending time with high school government students in Northeast Georgia, I'm always impressed by the high caliber of discussion we enjoy. These bright young people studying our constitutional republic often have a command of our founders' vision of government that eludes elitist liberals and Washington bureaucrats.

Editorial: Enota school plan cultivates discontent

In reviewing the dispute over construction of the new Enota elementary school and dismantling of its beloved Smartville Garden, let's start by acknowledging how both sides have strong points, and satisfying everyone's concerns was never going to be an easy task.

Letter: Let Gainesville school leaders know thoughts on Enota plan

RE: Times article of June 7: "Gainesville going with original Enota school plan, which includes destroying garden." Over the last several weeks, a lively discussion has been held by hundreds of people interested in saving the garden at Enota school as part of the new school's overall design. Over 1,200 citizens signed a petition supporting the garden and imploring the board to proactively seek a realistic compromise.

Letter: Many tubing on Chattahoochee are violating the beauty of river

I have read a comment made on the Times' webpage about the tubing on the Chattahoochee River and it says exactly what I have been thinking for many years now and should have already sent this letter to the editor about my feelings.

Dick Yarbrough: Georgia athletic director owns up to Ludacris concert debacle

I haven't met UGA Athletic Director Greg McGarity, but I give him high marks for the way in which he has handled the blowback from the ludicrous Ludacris debacle.

Letter: School board didn’t listen to feedback on Enota project

I was most disturbed to read the June 7 headline that our Gainesville Board of Education "returns to (the) original Enota plan." As a city taxpayer and a person who spent 40 years teaching students the importance of examining all sides of a question, I feel betrayed by our board.

Letter: Bathroom choices should not be made by sudden personal whim

In my letter in May concerning gender neutral public restrooms, I did not say that I was against such - I am. My thought was the subject was not going away.

Letter: Local churches still committed to agency helping homeless families

In recent weeks, the care of our homeless neighbors in the Gainesville community has been a hot topic, in part due to unanticipated loss of financial and volunteer support for Family Promise. Over the course of the last few years, Family Promise has faithfully served our community's homeless children and their families in the hope of ending the cycle of family homelessness. It has also given people of faith in the Gainesville community a very meaningful way to love and serve our homeless neighbors face-to-face.

Letter: Public housing is not just ‘projects’ but a warm home to many residents

Recently, there have been several articles in The Times regarding public housing. It is to my dismay that Atlanta Street or Green Hunter Homes will be demolished and even renamed, dismissing the contribution of the person the complex was named after. What is more confusing is the reasoning for its demise, given Melrose was built first and thus is the oldest of the HUD housing.

Congratulations to Garland Reynolds on the beautiful documentary he helped produced on the incredible life of Jackson County veteran Damon "Rocky" Gause. It was so well done and made his life journey so real. The nurse, Millie Dalton, was also given the recognition she deserved.

Rocky Marciano served in the U.S. Army to fight for his country. Later, he became boxing's heavyweight champion in the 1950s; he fought 49 fights and won them all, 43 from knockouts. When his country called he was there to serve.

Editorial: Pan Am Championships at Olympic Park set a new gold medal standard

Now that the volunteers, professionals and community leaders involved in staging the 2016 Pan American Championships at Lake Lanier Olympic Park two weeks ago have had a chance to catch their collective breaths and relax a bit, it's time for them all to bask in the satisfaction that comes from a job well done.

Dick Yarbrough: Your name carries significance

It is the policy of this modest and much-beloved columnist to give you in-depth analysis of the really important issues taking place in our nation. I will leave presidential politics to the New York Times, who think their sweat doesn't stink and that guy on MSNBC who looks like the Pillsbury Doughboy. Here we cover just the big stuff.
