Editorial: Trump's foes pay the high price of losing

For the latest summary of the Trump administration's whirlwind two-week debut, we refer to this quote from a sage observer of the American political scene:

Letter: Understanding our differences could heal divide

As an educator for over 20 years, I have been a staunch advocate for public education. Education can change the world. Language is power. The words we use either open up or shut down possibilities for students. What our schools offer to students and the models educators set for them have profound influence on the future of our democracy.

Letter: Americans should oppose effort to sell cherished public lands

Hunters, fishermen, hikers, campers, and friends of the natural heritage of our great country are expressing alarm at a recent proposal by Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah to sell off 3.3 million acres of public land. A further proposal of Rep. Chaffetz adds insult to injury by taking away the power of Forest Service personnel to enforce regulations within its boundaries.

Letter: Voters chose a president who will take us down an old path

Most of you reading this are responsible. Most of you chose the 45th president (hereinafter referred to as 45) to lead us. It was an irrational choice and we are being led down an old path that ended in the Bush-Cheney recession (not the Great Recession, as there was nothing great about it, unless you were in a position similar to 45 and could make a lot of money off people's suffering).

Letter: Citizen participation in local government is encouraging

The Times' Sunday editorial spoke about an issue that is near and dear to my heart: citizen involvement in local government. More people need to do this in Hall County, its local cities and municipalities. This is where we have the best opportunity to participate in our democracy.

Letter: Despite critics and protesters, Trump has us on right path

Jim Scharnagel and Ruben Navarrette couldn't have presented a more different picture or description of President Donald Trump in Tuesday's issue of The Times.

Letter: Torture is the only way to fight barbarism, combat terrorism

I had to laugh when I read the letter, "We can't let US condone use of torture" by Joan O. King. Yes, no doubt, torture is barbaric, but I have a question. How else are we supposed to fight barbarians? Maybe ask them to go to their room for a time-out?

Letter: New president is a threat to nation’s future

Whoever wrote the editorial in the Jan. 22 edition of The Times had their head buried in the sand. The gist of the editorial was that we should relent and assist Donald Trump to make America great again. It would be asinine to spin our wheels on a government gone completely awry.

Letter: ‘Palestine’ is a term used by Israelis to label Arabs

I'm responding to Bill Morrison's letter to the editor about Palestine. He stated "'Palestine' is a Jewish term for the Jewish land; it is not an Arab or Muslim term."

Letter: Columnist’s harsh potshots at Dems were not funny, seemed out of line

Saturday's column by your resident humorist, Dick Yarbrough, about the Democratic Party's "left turn" wasn't funny; it managed to be both silly and ignorant at the same time. Mr. Yarbrough is what you'd call a "Republican humorist." which is an oxymoron. Dick, you might have to look that word up. If there's a Republican version of Will Rogers, it's not Dick Yarbrough.

Letter: South supports president, but he should switch Super Bowl teams

Dear Mr. President: On Nov. 9, my alarm went off and I started to feel the depression setting in thinking America would still be on this wrong road we traveled down the last eight years. To my excitement, I went to Google and immediately it had your picture as our new president-elect.

Letter: Cost of birth control pills doesn’t justify charging taxpayers for it

Re Sunday story "Political changes lead women to seek new birth control options:" Nicole Mason, quoted in this article, apparently confuses "not having access to birth control" with the possible requirement of having to pay for birth control. She says it's "upsetting" to think that women are switching to more invasive (and far more costly) methods of control such as IUDs simply because currently their insurance (or the government) will pay for such procedures.
