Editorial: Hall County is still moving forward

Inside today's print edition of The Times is the annual special section which we call Progress. In it, we attempt to capture just a few examples of the incredible things that have gone on in our community over the past year which add to the exceptional quality of life we have come to associate with living and working in Hall County and the surrounding area.

Letter: Gainesville should better enforce rules to clean up Midtown

In reading the article in The Times on Sunday regarding the new apartment complex Enclave being built off MLK Boulevard, as a resident of the southside of Gainesville, I am glad you are noticing the perils Midtown faces. I was born on Bradford Street almost 68 years ago in the house that I am living in now. The house has been in my family since 1936.

Letter: Story falsely summarized FBI director’s wiretap stance

From the Times Tuesday, March 21, Page 3A: "Director Comey also says Trump wiretap claims false." I listened to much of Director Comey's comments. At no time did he claim the wiretap complaints by then president-elect Trump were false. Mr. Comey said that he had no knowledge of any wiretaps by the FBI. Big difference.

Letter: Americans deserve better health option than GOP bill

Health care really is a complex topic. One reason health care is tricky is because my health is not solely determined by my choices, but by my neighbors, my co-workers and even people I have never met. Diseases arise seemingly out of nowhere to spread among us. Accidents happen when we least expect them. That is why we all need some sort of insurance.

Letter: Tobacco no worse than alcohol, should remain a legal choice

In response to the letter in The Times on March 10 ("Young people are best hope to end 'targeting' by Big Tobacco"), I must say with all due respect that the anti-tobacco campaign is the very definition of hypocrisy.

Letter: Collins needs to address all the problems with GOP health bill

On March 6, Ken Akins, Marissa Pyle and myself met with Rep. Doug Collins at his Gainesville office to talk about the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). We were joined outside his office by over 100 friends from all over the 9th District. Since Rep. Collins refuses to hold in person town halls, we went to him!

Editorial: State should put students before politics

Georgia voters rejected a proposed amendment to the constitution last fall that would have allowed the state to assume control of struggling schools. So lawmakers literally went back to school, and the drawing board, to craft a Plan B this year.

Guest column: Move to approve injections by optometrists is a dangerous idea

We, as Americans, aspire to be great. It's why we lead the world in creativity, innovation, and economic growth. Yet, occasionally, our efforts have unintended and potentially dangerous consequences.

Letter: State tax dollars should not fund private toll roads

One of the most egregious bills I have ever read is making its way through the Georgia General Assembly, another "Governor's bill" which, as usual, passed the Georgia Senate unanimously. As I write, this bill sits waiting for a vote in the House Transportation Committee to send it to the House floor, and then onto the governor's desk.

Please note first: I'm a lifelong, avid football fan. Note secondly that I greatly admire those who dedicate their lives to teaching, as my wife Sandra did so ardently and devotedly for 26 years.

We need to help the youth get on board, whether over religion, drug usage or radical political views. The youth of this city need to take a stand. We as citizens are not just solely responsible for healing your community, but are required to do so. We have the right to have opinions and the ability to preach said opinions freely.
