Given that we are on the doorstep of Independence Day, I thought this the appropriate time again to deal with the true heritage of this great nation. This is especially true in light of President Barack Obama again declaring that America is not a Christian nation.

Georgia's recession has put state government in the same position as a penny-pinching old geezer, the kind who searches under the sofa cushions for lost dimes and quarters or cashes in that jar of pennies he's been hoarding.
You've seen the commercial, I'm sure. A father spent four weekends building a treehouse for his children only to find them playing cards and watching DVDs in the family's Toyota minivan. They're oblivious to his excitement, telling him, "We're good here" and return to their card game as the father closes the van door and walks dejectedly away.

The State Transportation Board has elected yet another commissioner for that troubled agency: state Rep. Vance Smith, R-Pine Mountain, a person who has some expertise in highway construction because his family-owned business did a lot of road grading back in Harris County.

Hard to believe, but some people actually get their knickers in a wad over observations that emanate from this space. After a careful analysis of critical comments (insert joke here), I have decided that the vast number of complainants suffer from a serious case of humor deficiency.

The evil of fear and hatred are not the sole province of extremists like Muslim militants, violent anti-abortionists and white supremacists. Understanding this fact in no way excuses or justifies the horrific acts committed by such criminals. The problem is, most of us fail to see through the camouflage of such poisonous and high-profile acts, and understand the subtleties of hatred occurring daily among ordinary folks.

Our granddaughter's school requires all eighth-grade students to study the Old Testament. The course is called World Religions, but the text comes from the Bible. In high school, students study the New Testament.
The United States' oldest overseas military post, Guantanamo Naval Base (or "Gitmo") on the southeastern coast of Cuba, does not rest on property belonging to the United States. The actual owner of that territory legally is Cuba. We rent it from Cuba at a cost of $2,000 per year, according to the Lease Agreement signed in 1903.
The defining feature of a free society is every individual enjoying the freedom to make choices, good and bad, within the law. Enjoying the liberty to make your own choices is highly valued. So political groups market themselves as supporting Americans' autonomy of choice.
