Judge Smith served state’s justice well

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I join in celebrating the forthcoming retirement of Georgia Court of Appeals Judge J.D. Smith of Hall County after his four decades of labor in the justice system.

Adoption is a blessing worth celebrating

November is National Adoption Month. How appropriate as I am so very thankful for the blessings of my two adopted daughters!

Easy to see the double standard surrounding Obama

Some time back, Barack Obama and his leftist, liberal friends and supporters made a strong case for toning down the hateful dialogue between his progressives and the conservatives in our nation. This, of course, has proved to be just another ploy by our "groveler in chief" to silence his critics, the American people.

Secret to success in college, life is to get involved

There are some modern misconceptions surrounding one attending university that I would like to address.

Referring to fringe groups as ‘militia’ tarnishes our real citizens’ defense

In light of recent media coverage of the four alleged North Georgia terrorists, it's time to set the record straight on the meaning of "militia."

Lula again shows why it is a small town with a big heart

After living in a large city for several years it was unconceivable to me to think about living in a small town. However, on Veterans Day, God gave me the answer.

Taxpayers should not shell out for misuse of police vehicles

Where I live there is a police car that sits in the driveway of this house on the corner of the street. As I do not go out at night, I can only assume that the policeman that lives there is on the night shift.

Another building for lease could be used by Brenau University

Brenau University: Space is for lease in the old Liberty Mutual building at the corner of Browns Bridge and McEver. It seems the city of Gainesville already owns the building and it is unoccupied at the present time. You own it, use it. Just sayin'!

City still needs venue to display our local talent

I understand that the Gainesville City Council is considering leasing the Georgia Mountains Center to Brenau University for additional school space. I strongly oppose this as do many other people since this will no longer provide a venue for entertainment (including our local talent) and community groups of all kinds. There is no other facility in the area for these events.

Young people, enjoy the good times, fun rides while they last

Riding home one night recently, my friend, E.P., and I couldn't help but to start reminiscing about the good old days and the good times that we had as we were amazed at the carnival or fair, or whatever they call it these days. The rides and attractions were set up right in the middle of downtown Gainesville.

Veteran heroes pass the torch to keep us free

This Veteran's Day we should remember and thank all those who have bravely served our country and military. We want to especially recognize and honor those of World War II. Why? Because we are rapidly losing them! According to the Veteran's Administration we are losing veterans of WWII at a rate of more than 740 a day.

Georgia does not need money earned from casino gambling

"Casinos could produce $1 billion a year," but for who? I hope the people of our beloved state won't fall for that line. That statement could be true, but who would benefit from the proceeds? I hope the schools won't be used to get something like that passed.

Brenau’s use of Mountains Center won’t enhance city

As someone who has been a Georgia Mountain Players season ticket holder for the past eight or so years, I want to add my name to the list of concerned citizens of Gainesville and the surrounding area regarding the proposed plan to lease the Georgia Mountain Center to Brenau University for use as classroom and lecture hall space.

Christians, don’t get caught up in creation debate

In my opinion, any of the saints and faithful brethren in Christ Jesus who have allowed themselves to be duped into creation debates, as in current Your Views letters based on Joan King's Oct. 18 column, should be ashamed.

Americans should insist that our Social Security IOUs be honored

When Lyndon Johnson was president, he and all the rest of the Democrats said we had more money in Social Security than we would ever be able to spend. So what did they do? President Johnson and the Democrats took a great deal of money out of Social Security and put an IOU in the account.

Your Views: Tourism industry can get creative to offset extra fee

I am a little disappointed in the article titled "New fee upsets tourism industry." The article itself was well written and worthy of the front page. However, the content of those interviewed and their titles was a little disturbing.

Your Views: Obama’s push for tyranny is a right-wing plan

Regarding Thomas Day's recent letter, I wonder if he expects readers to buy what he's selling. Day speaks of tyranny, saying President Barack Obama has "come closer to establishing tyranny in the United States than at any other time in our history."

I am an addict. I take all things I like to excess. I am now 45 years old and a full two seconds away from a bad decision, instead of one second like when I was younger.

Your Views: Smithgall’s support for the arts sets our community apart

Gainesville-Hall County, with the Northeast Georgia Medical System, is one of Georgia's prominent medical centers. With Lake Lanier, it is one of Georgia's prominent recreation hubs. With the poultry research laboratory and a high number of poultry industry businesses, it is one of the state's agricultural centers. With the changing seasons in the Gainesville section of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the area will become a prominent center for celebrating spring, summer, fall and even winter.

Your Views: US government is held hostage by a tyranny of the minority

The recent celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Selma march was a wonderful event to remind us of the progress that has been made since that event. One unfortunate event was Jesse Jackson's comments decrying the tyranny of the majority over the minority. It is clear by his remarks that he neither understands the meaning of tyranny nor does he understand our form of government.

Your Views: Who’s going to fly our plane? Rice would be the ideal pilot

I know the souls of those who went down in the plane in France are in heaven, with the exception of one. Folks, we are also on the next plane heading the same way, only we have one thing in our favor: The door to the control cabin is open and desperately in need of a pilot.

Your Views: Series on foster child care opened eyes to a serious issue

On more than one occasion, I have taken pen to paper to offer my criticism of your newspaper. It is expected that we subscribers will do that. When a newspaper does something that I feel is commendable, I will also offer my praise as well as extending my subscription another quarter.
