City still needs venue to display our local talent

I understand that the Gainesville City Council is considering leasing the Georgia Mountains Center to Brenau University for additional school space. I strongly oppose this as do many other people since this will no longer provide a venue for entertainment (including our local talent) and community groups of all kinds. There is no other facility in the area for these events.

Young people, enjoy the good times, fun rides while they last

Riding home one night recently, my friend, E.P., and I couldn't help but to start reminiscing about the good old days and the good times that we had as we were amazed at the carnival or fair, or whatever they call it these days. The rides and attractions were set up right in the middle of downtown Gainesville.

Veteran heroes pass the torch to keep us free

This Veteran's Day we should remember and thank all those who have bravely served our country and military. We want to especially recognize and honor those of World War II. Why? Because we are rapidly losing them! According to the Veteran's Administration we are losing veterans of WWII at a rate of more than 740 a day.

Georgia does not need money earned from casino gambling

"Casinos could produce $1 billion a year," but for who? I hope the people of our beloved state won't fall for that line. That statement could be true, but who would benefit from the proceeds? I hope the schools won't be used to get something like that passed.

Brenau’s use of Mountains Center won’t enhance city

As someone who has been a Georgia Mountain Players season ticket holder for the past eight or so years, I want to add my name to the list of concerned citizens of Gainesville and the surrounding area regarding the proposed plan to lease the Georgia Mountain Center to Brenau University for use as classroom and lecture hall space.

Christians, don’t get caught up in creation debate

In my opinion, any of the saints and faithful brethren in Christ Jesus who have allowed themselves to be duped into creation debates, as in current Your Views letters based on Joan King's Oct. 18 column, should be ashamed.

Americans should insist that our Social Security IOUs be honored

When Lyndon Johnson was president, he and all the rest of the Democrats said we had more money in Social Security than we would ever be able to spend. So what did they do? President Johnson and the Democrats took a great deal of money out of Social Security and put an IOU in the account.

Rise in education costs similar to real estate bubble

The president recently made a campaign speech about the magnitude of the problem created by student debt and possible solutions. This has caused talking heads on television to rant about the causes. Liberals say tuition increases are a result of decreasing support by government. Conservatives say it is caused by the easy access to borrowed money.

More road signs, speed bumps are a waste; just enforce the law

I see that the Gainesville City Council has voted to impede traffic even further by spending some $42,000 on speed bumps and more signs in the Lakeview Academy area.

US following similar path to ruin of other great societies

What are your thoughts on our republic today? Many years ago, on the subject of the fall of the Athenian republic, Alexander Tytler said:

Graves supporting big banks’ ability to impose new user fees

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves should learn that two wrongs don't make a right. Recently, I wrote him as not only an area resident but a former professor of money and banking, outlining how such megabanks as Bank of America and Wells Fargo have begun abusing their customers' trust, and the public trust as well, by imposing new debit card usage fees of up to $5 a month.

Following current path will lead US to Romans’ fate

I'm no historian, but take note of some disturbing trends I see in our nation. Because if an average man with average knowledge of history who's not crazy about the study of history sees these, it may be time to act. It may be past time.

County vehicle used for personal trip is a waste of tax money

I just returned from a trip to the supermarket. As I was leaving the store I happened to look over as a husband and wife were loading their groceries into their vehicle - their county government vehicle!

Freedom to be wrong is evident on Iraq withdrawal, oil in Libya

Is this a great country or what? I've heard since 2002 how we are fighting for our freedom in the Middle East in regard to American troops being there. I thought we gained that freedom in 1776.

Your Views: Budget policy group has many ideas to boost school funding

Hall County's school superintendent unfairly claimed in an Oct. 21 guest column in The Times that my organization's research lamented the billions in education state budget cuts in recent years without suggesting ways Georgia might reverse the damage the financial squeeze is causing.

Your Views: Water group’s concerns are only about wise policies, not politics

Thank you for your coverage of the Georgia Water Coalition's Dirty Dozen report (Oct. 22). As it has for the past three years, the GWC's Dirty Dozen report details how state water policy is leading to the wasteful use of state funds and complicating the two-decade old water dispute with Florida and Alabama.

Your Views: Parker shows her ignorance about hunting methods

Kathleen Parker, in her Oct. 23 Opinion Page article, demonstrates her complete ignorance of hunting and disdain for hunters in general by quoting or referencing comments from one of the most anti-hunting groups in this country, namely the Humane Society of the United States.

Your Views: Madison County’s decision was based on avoiding a losing battle

Perhaps guts had nothing to do with the decision the school board in Madison County made concerning the religious monument on school grounds. Maybe its members chose to not set up their county for a budget-busting legal case that could bankrupt them.

Your Views: Trouble brewing when city allows morality to slide

I just want to extend a word of thanks to Gainesville City Councilmen Bob Hamrick and George Wangemann for taking the moral high ground on the brewery issue. Gainesville and Hall County have gotten along just fine for decades without having a brewery. Inevitably, this will bring bars and other establishments that attract unwanted attention in the form of drunkenness and other social maladies that create areas of crime and rude behavior.

Your Views: There’s no good reason for vote for any Democrat in fall election

When you add it all up, the steady stream of lies from the White House, the Democratic party and its supporters, the liberal left media, there is only one answer: There is NO Democratic candidate worthy of even a single vote. In fact, I don't see how a Democrat could vote for himself or herself.
