Rise in education costs similar to real estate bubble

The president recently made a campaign speech about the magnitude of the problem created by student debt and possible solutions. This has caused talking heads on television to rant about the causes. Liberals say tuition increases are a result of decreasing support by government. Conservatives say it is caused by the easy access to borrowed money.

More road signs, speed bumps are a waste; just enforce the law

I see that the Gainesville City Council has voted to impede traffic even further by spending some $42,000 on speed bumps and more signs in the Lakeview Academy area.

US following similar path to ruin of other great societies

What are your thoughts on our republic today? Many years ago, on the subject of the fall of the Athenian republic, Alexander Tytler said:

Sales tax would be put in hands of unelected groups

I look forward to voting "no" in July 2012 to the T-SPLOST tax. My reasons:

Graves supporting big banks’ ability to impose new user fees

U.S. Rep. Tom Graves should learn that two wrongs don't make a right. Recently, I wrote him as not only an area resident but a former professor of money and banking, outlining how such megabanks as Bank of America and Wells Fargo have begun abusing their customers' trust, and the public trust as well, by imposing new debit card usage fees of up to $5 a month.

Following current path will lead US to Romans’ fate

I'm no historian, but take note of some disturbing trends I see in our nation. Because if an average man with average knowledge of history who's not crazy about the study of history sees these, it may be time to act. It may be past time.

County vehicle used for personal trip is a waste of tax money

I just returned from a trip to the supermarket. As I was leaving the store I happened to look over as a husband and wife were loading their groceries into their vehicle - their county government vehicle!

Freedom to be wrong is evident on Iraq withdrawal, oil in Libya

Is this a great country or what? I've heard since 2002 how we are fighting for our freedom in the Middle East in regard to American troops being there. I thought we gained that freedom in 1776.

President doesn’t use his intellect to solve problems

My recent horoscope in The Times read as follows: "Those who don't see very deeply into a situation won't notice its complications. You wish you were in that group. Alas, you can tell where the problem lies, and you feel responsible to do something about it."

Science has proven age of earth, despite other bizarre theories

This is in reply to the nonsensical tirade by Ted Hinds in Monday's Times.

Public funding of campaigns would save money, serve us better

Am I the only one appalled by the obscene waste of money we squander to elect our public officials? This has always been an "elect the least of evils" situation but it has, for years, been growing continually worse.

Candidates should not pander to voters based on their faith

In Monday's edition of The Times, a writer takes issue with Joan King's recent column regarding the current anti-science fervor in politics. The writer describes a faith-based alternative theory for the creation of the universe centered on the belief that "God can easily create something that is already old."

Blowout games don’t provide positive lessons

As I looked over the scores for the Friday games, I was disturbed at the large number in which the loser was not only beaten but completely humiliated: 66-7, 44-0, 55-0, 48-3, 55-6. These were scores in just the top 30 listed.

Why would our God create an ‘older’ universe just to fool us?

In response to Mr. Hinds' letter Monday, I must speak out. His position is that God created the universe 10,000 years ago but made everything in it look and test by every scientific way possible to be 14 billion years old.

Universe debate misses fact that God can create something old

Joan King tells Christian skeptics that we are purveyors of "bad science encouraged by bad politics," including our skepticism about man-made global warming, etc. But she really does not like the idea that God created the universe relatively recently. Here, she shows her ignorance of how to think carefully about her presuppositions.

Your Views: Lions Clubs look to grow, add to service

Your article Sunday concerning challenges to area civic clubs did a good job in pointing out the struggles most civic clubs have in carrying on the work that they do.

Your Views: Hall County’s big heart helps refill food bank

I would personally like to thank the good and generous people of Hall County for their contributions of canned and boxed food items that helped to restock the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Your very generous donations will help feed the hungry and needy among us in Hall County and four surrounding counties.

Your Views: Letter writer, columnist defend weak presidents, attack Bush

I do not make it a habit of reading your left-leaning (Your Views) section. This is in direct response to Gabriel Shippy's comments about how George Bush got us in a war.

Your Views: Funding for Obama’s war is already there

To fund Mr. Obama's war, the Pentagon, at this time, has nearly $60 billion, unspent, in the Overseas Contingency Operations Fund.

Your Views: Focus on horrors by Islamic State ignores others

Every day I'm confronted with news reports suggesting the militant Islamic State organization is a threat to America. It is constantly in the news with lurid stories of mass executions and beheadings. These stories are reported as if atrocities and mass killings are not commonplace in war.

Your Views: Obama’s problems in Iraq started with Bush’s policies

It's hard not to feel a bit of sympathy for President Barack Obama. A lot of us predicted that whoever was elected to office after President George W. Bush would inherit a catastrophe on a domestic and international level. That prediction has turned out to be tragically accurate.

Your Views: Islamic State zealots raise memories of Nazi Germany

I read Friday's column by Jonah Goldberg, "A Web-fueled Foreign Legion for losers," with much trepidation. Yes, I fully agree that these "born-again" Islamists for the most part are comprised of the disenfranchised "losers" living on the fringes of society. They are now presented with an opportunity to inject their depravities onto minority segments of the population, or those that do not accept their 14th century laws and codes. This movement presents opportunities for them to obtain the power that they cannot otherwise gain through legal and democratic means.

Your Views: Lack of leadership from Obama, Congress will doom our nation

Since Barack Obama was first elected president in 2008, nothing good has come to pass for the American people. Our economy has gone to hell and still continues to get worse. All the lofty promises this incompetent loon made have failed to materialize.

Your Views: Substitute teachers’ pay unfair

How many people realize substitute teachers only make minimum wage? These people are always on call and can be asked to go to different schools. Now we read where the head of the school system just received a raise bringing his salary to more than $180,000 per year. Does anybody see anything wrong with this picture?

Your Views: ALS bucket challenge is a noble cause

I read with interest but disappointment the comments by Guy Jordan in The Times Aug. 23 regarding his concern and being upset because Brenau University participated in the ALS ice bucket challenge, and his perspective on how this type of goodwill activity could be counterproductive and dangerous "in the long run."
