Your Views: Church always has stood for sanctity of life

I very much would like to correct a gross error which was written in Joan King's last article Feb. 7. The Roman Catholic Church has never permitted abortion. St. John, Chrysostom, St. Basil the Great, St. Gregory the Great, indeed all the church fathers of the ancient undivided Catholic and Apostolic Church are unanimous in their condemnations of killing the human fetus.

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I offer condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of longtime Gainesville attorney W. Woodrow Stewart on his recent passing.

Turn away from distorted views of faith

Concerning Alan Shope's latest political-religious rant "Being good for good's sake is its own reward:" I am in no way, shape or form in agreement with any of his radical, distorted and possibly blasphemous religious views. However, in this latest article, I perceive he has failed to take advantage of an opportunity to point out the real truth of the matter.

Reliance on government can become a habit

How many times have you heard someone say "the government should do something about that?"

School board needs to disclose reasons for valedictorian pick

This comment is in relation to the recent controversy surrounding Gainesville High School's selection of co-valedictorians for the May 2012 graduation. Historically valedictorians have been chosen based on highest GPAs. When deviations to this norm are taken, people pay attention and ask "why?"

Valedictorian should be proud, even if he is sharing the honor

I want to start by saying congratulations to Gainesville High School student Cody Stephens for being named valedictorian. His work and persistence are to be commended. The fact that he was named co-valedictorian takes nothing away from my respect for him.

Is the Golden Rule too simple?

It is difficult for me to disagree with some of Alan Shope's observations, but I wonder why he submitted all of this Billy Graham stuff. When did he have his meeting with God? Is he a frustrated preacher wishing to share his fear and confusion? Is practicing the Golden Rule too simple?

True heroes wear real helmets, not the football kind

I love watching football, but I often have considered professional athletes overgrown, overpaid, egomaniacal children who were completely out of touch with reality. A story I read today on the ESPN website brought my awareness of this problem to a new level.

Being good for good’s sake is its own reward

In addition to its love affair with wealth and power, the other problem with fundamentalist religion, including fundamentalist Christianity, is its insistence that some people will spend eternity in hell.

Will candidates deal on the sly to feed moon colony?

It's obvious that Newt Gingrich has made a deal with Rick Perry. Newt promised Perry that Perry would go down in history if he would drop out and endorse Gingrich.

Even with a ‘no’ vote on sales tax, we’ll have to pay

Those that will profit off of the transportation SPLOST want to educate the public on why you should vote "yes." But what about the little guy paying all the costs?

Commissioners saved residents from Oakwood

Thank heaven for the good sense and activism of the Hall County commission who truly make an attempt to represent the residents of Hall County. Anyone who has ever had any dealings with the city of Oakwood knows how devious it is.

Rep. Rusty Kidd's DUI legislation ("Bill could offer 2nd chance after DUI charge," Sunday's Times) is the wrong bill at the wrong time.

Your Views: Focus on horrors by Islamic State ignores others

Every day I'm confronted with news reports suggesting the militant Islamic State organization is a threat to America. It is constantly in the news with lurid stories of mass executions and beheadings. These stories are reported as if atrocities and mass killings are not commonplace in war.

Your Views: Obama’s problems in Iraq started with Bush’s policies

It's hard not to feel a bit of sympathy for President Barack Obama. A lot of us predicted that whoever was elected to office after President George W. Bush would inherit a catastrophe on a domestic and international level. That prediction has turned out to be tragically accurate.

Your Views: Islamic State zealots raise memories of Nazi Germany

I read Friday's column by Jonah Goldberg, "A Web-fueled Foreign Legion for losers," with much trepidation. Yes, I fully agree that these "born-again" Islamists for the most part are comprised of the disenfranchised "losers" living on the fringes of society. They are now presented with an opportunity to inject their depravities onto minority segments of the population, or those that do not accept their 14th century laws and codes. This movement presents opportunities for them to obtain the power that they cannot otherwise gain through legal and democratic means.

Your Views: Lack of leadership from Obama, Congress will doom our nation

Since Barack Obama was first elected president in 2008, nothing good has come to pass for the American people. Our economy has gone to hell and still continues to get worse. All the lofty promises this incompetent loon made have failed to materialize.

Your Views: Substitute teachers’ pay unfair

How many people realize substitute teachers only make minimum wage? These people are always on call and can be asked to go to different schools. Now we read where the head of the school system just received a raise bringing his salary to more than $180,000 per year. Does anybody see anything wrong with this picture?

Your Views: ALS bucket challenge is a noble cause

I read with interest but disappointment the comments by Guy Jordan in The Times Aug. 23 regarding his concern and being upset because Brenau University participated in the ALS ice bucket challenge, and his perspective on how this type of goodwill activity could be counterproductive and dangerous "in the long run."

Your Views: Obama has his head in the sand as threat grows

How can we understand our commander in chief's complete refusal to describe terrorists accurately as Islamic radicals instead of just "extremists" or terrorist acts in America as "workplace violence" and his refusal to acknowledge their real threat to the world?

Your Views: Mall is not a good use for tax funds

Whoever said we should use taxpayer money to fix up a mall most likely will gain something from it. I wish people that want to use our tax money for things that don't help the taxpayers could be fired.

Your Views: As Rome fell, so will US if we stay on this path

In light of recent articles in The Times concerning the issue of prayer at Chestatee High School, I feel inclined to share some of my own personal observations about the problem with this situation, as well as problems of our nation.
