The voters have spoken and the T-SPLOST was defeated by a vote count of 63 percent against on a statewide level.
The voters of Georgia should be commended for the overwhelming vote against the transportation sales tax Tuesday. This would have been a gigantic tax increase on all Georgians and would do little to alleviate traffic problems and congestion in the metro area. It was a bipartisan effort of strange bedfellows: conservatives, liberals, blacks, whites, Democrats and Republicans.
Wow, what a wake-up call Tuesday. You see politicians, we the people do not believe your empty promises of the past and we certainly will not believe your full-of-bologna promises for your re-election.
The November presidential election is the most important in the nation's history. It will be a contest between two ideologies, not two traditional political parties. At stake is whether you want to keep our free constitutional form of government or become a social welfare state.
Referring to the July 25 article about leaking classified information, I am in complete agreement with Mitt Romney. Furthermore, it was hard to believe when I saw the film which very closely (I presume) followed the exploits and duties carried out by SEAL Team Six. I spent 20 plus years in the Army and all but basic training required a top secret clearance and some even higher. In that time we could not even overfly (as a passenger) any Soviet country.
I want to thank Mitch Clarke for his column in Sunday's paper about free speech. I agree wholeheartedly that anyone should be able to voice his opinion without being attacked by media, politicians and celebrities.
I won't say that things in our nation couldn't be worse because they could be, and God forbid, will be, if we as a free people don't wake up from this comatose condition we now find ourselves in.
Is Michael Wheeler's July 19, column, "Food prices forecast to rise worldwide" a modern day prophesy?
In light of the proposed expansion of gambling here in Georgia, I would like to know exactly what will be done with the funds generated. Will it be used to replace funds currently allocated from the state budget for education, therefore allowing those funds to be used elsewhere?
I am really confused. Several Hall County commissioners talk about not raising taxes and a flat tax rate over the last eight years.
The Colorado movie kids' accused killer had purchased the weapons legally at three area gun stores in the last 60 days and bought 6,000 rounds of ammunition online, including a 100-round drum magazine for an assault rifle. Thank goodness buying a 100-round magazine is legal and raises no flags. Nice work writing law by the NRA and the gun manufacturers.
Our beloved nation once more must take communion from the bread of bitterness and the tea of sorrow. Another name is engraved upon the roll call of evil as Aurora is added to Tucson, Fort Hood, Virginia Tech and Columbine.
Is there misleading information regarding T-SPLOST?
Ten reasons to vote "no" on T-SPLOST
We do not need more roads; we need fewer cars.
I write this letter to pose further understanding after Tuesday's column by Joan King. Ms. King is a thoughtful and generally cogent writer. I read her column faithfully and remain in strong respect for her consistent revelations concerning the ongoing corruption in our nuclear plant construction process.
I am the director of nursing for Homestead Hospice of Athens and we have patients who are residents at Summers Landing Assisted living facility in Gainesville. It was a complete coincidence that I was visiting the facility at the exact moment that some frozen pipes in the ceiling burst Jan. 8. I wanted to write a letter to the editor in attempt to recognize the staff of Summers Landing. They happened to be having a staff meeting at the same time and that meant there were more employees in the building than usual.
On more than one occasion, I have taken pen to paper to offer my criticism of your newspaper. It is expected that we subscribers will do that. When a newspaper does something that I feel is commendable, I will also offer my praise as well as extending my subscription another quarter.
