Your Views: Left exploits tragedy rather than focusing on moral decay

The senseless, insane killing of 20 innocent children and six adults in Newtown, Conn., is beyond our understanding. It violates every ethical and moral standard that we have held dear. Our hearts and sympathies go out to the victims families and the residents of Newtown.

Your Views: ‘Gun-free zones’ are an invitation to evil cowards

A terrible and senseless act was committed recently in Connecticut and many young lives were lost as a result. The "knee-jerk" reaction has been that we need to have more gun laws or more strict gun laws. That reaction is completely wrong.

Your Views: Millions for ‘special access’ to inauguration out of place today

After reading the article in Wednesday's Times, "$1M donations wanted for Obama inauguration," I am appalled and so angry. With our country in tremendous debt, Americans hungry and some homeless and Social Security being threatened, how dare President Barack Obama ask for $1 million to have parties? Why spend all this money on some parties?

Your Views: Someone is going to profit from any new laws to limit firearms

Vice President Joe Biden promises gun laws to change. Whether your for it or against it, you can be sure of two things.

Your Views: Gainesville fire, police prompt service is appreciated

Thank you, city of Gainesville. On the evening of Jan. 5, I received a home security call. I got home with two city police cars and a fire truck from Station 1. The police came to check on the motion alarm in my house, and when walking outside my home, they smelled gas.

Your Views: Big Red proud of its champs, grateful for support

On behalf of the entire Gainesville City Schools family, we thank the Gainesville and Hall County community for the remarkable support we received during our successful quest for the state Class AAAAA football championship. We congratulate Coach Bruce Miller, his coaching staff and the team on the hard work and determination that resulted in our bringing home the championship to Gainesville.

Your Views: Sewer rate change was forced on county residents despite opposing voices

At the December meeting of the Hall County Board of Commissioners, three commissioners demonstrated their willingness to continue to strategize behind the scenes and vote as an alliance rather than on the merit of a proposal.

Your Views: Proper firearm training can help stop those who commit crimes

Gun safety can be an issue for people who are against guns. They don't own one, and that's fine, but the media shouldn't scare them into never owning one.

Your Views: Simple math can solve how earth’s population grew

A letter to The Times on Dec. 27 asked the question: How could two people produce today's population of more than 7 billion people in 9,000 or so years? Simple conservative arithmetic reveals the answer.

Your Views: It’s time to end ad valorem taxes for those with older vehicles

Thank you for clarifying the information about the new motor vehicle title fee. However, one fact about the fee has been swept under the political rug ever since it was ramrodded through the legislature with no apparent thought about how it would affect every resident: The annual ad valorem tax continues without relief for anyone who can't buy a car, whether new or used, beginning in 2013.

Your Views: Election reform needed to level the playing field

The recent article about buying and selling our elections was right on. What we now have as an election system is a farce. It is a playground for special-interest groups, and consequently, we get an electorate that is beholden to big money and not to the rest of us.

Your Views: Children here in US also need adoptive homes

I have sympathy for children who will be affected by the change in Russian law concerning their adoption by Americans. However, attention should be drawn to our own children who languish in foster care waiting for their forever families. Now is the time to take action for these precious kids!

Your Views: Beliefs or no, you can’t deny scientific facts

Trevor Thomas, who believes chickens and dinosaurs were "created" simultaneously, was back on his anti-evolution bandwagon in his Dec. 18 column. He should stick to writing about politics and such where he seems to adhere more closely to facts rather than continue to attack proven scientific knowledge.

Your Views: A better plan is needed to manage Lake Lanier water

As a homeowner on Lake Lanier and an Atlanta resident, I find the rapid decline in Lanier's level this year extremely frustrating. I am sympathetic to the corps' operating guidelines as it relates to our precious resource. The corps, like it or not, must supply water downstream to maintain water quality, navigational abilities and (gasp) protect endangered species. I do, however, see a lack of common sense being applied in many respects. Several major complaints come to mind every time I cross the river or look at my dock in Atlanta:

Your Views: President has failed to lead, fulfill promises

Mr. President: A lot of us aren't as foolish as the people who re-elected you. It's outrageous that you've been given a second term considering your abysmal record. Here are just a few examples:

Your Views: Tourism industry can get creative to offset extra fee

I am a little disappointed in the article titled "New fee upsets tourism industry." The article itself was well written and worthy of the front page. However, the content of those interviewed and their titles was a little disturbing.

Your Views: Obama’s push for tyranny is a right-wing plan

Regarding Thomas Day's recent letter, I wonder if he expects readers to buy what he's selling. Day speaks of tyranny, saying President Barack Obama has "come closer to establishing tyranny in the United States than at any other time in our history."

Your Views: Addictive behavior can be turned into community service

I am an addict. I take all things I like to excess. I am now 45 years old and a full two seconds away from a bad decision, instead of one second like when I was younger.

Your Views: Smithgall’s support for the arts sets our community apart

Gainesville-Hall County, with the Northeast Georgia Medical System, is one of Georgia's prominent medical centers. With Lake Lanier, it is one of Georgia's prominent recreation hubs. With the poultry research laboratory and a high number of poultry industry businesses, it is one of the state's agricultural centers. With the changing seasons in the Gainesville section of the Atlanta Botanical Gardens, the area will become a prominent center for celebrating spring, summer, fall and even winter.

Your Views: US government is held hostage by a tyranny of the minority

The recent celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Selma march was a wonderful event to remind us of the progress that has been made since that event. One unfortunate event was Jesse Jackson's comments decrying the tyranny of the majority over the minority. It is clear by his remarks that he neither understands the meaning of tyranny nor does he understand our form of government.

Your Views: Who’s going to fly our plane? Rice would be the ideal pilot

I know the souls of those who went down in the plane in France are in heaven, with the exception of one. Folks, we are also on the next plane heading the same way, only we have one thing in our favor: The door to the control cabin is open and desperately in need of a pilot.

Your Views: Series on foster child care opened eyes to a serious issue

On more than one occasion, I have taken pen to paper to offer my criticism of your newspaper. It is expected that we subscribers will do that. When a newspaper does something that I feel is commendable, I will also offer my praise as well as extending my subscription another quarter.
