Your Views: US still kicking can of fiscal responsibility

Can America survive by continually increasing the national debt? This question is becoming more apparent to many families that understand how budgets operate. The recent government shut down for 16 days helped to wake people up to the fact that something is very wrong in the federal government.

Your Views: Meals on Wheels is more than food; human contact is therapy

There have been two very meaningful stories in The Times recently concerning funding for the Meals on Wheels program in Gainesville and Hall County.

Your Views: Past presidents’ fibs were worse than Obama’s health care lies

Regarding Kathleen Parker's Nov. 7 article "Sins of omission," I realize her subject was primarily an effort to smear Obamacare (the Affordable Care Act). But if she wishes to point out lies, that quote about being able to keep your insurance was nowhere near the greatest or most damaging lie ever told. It was not even the worst of Obama's lies. That would be Obama's claim that change has come to America. He said it way more than 23 times, and we know repetition is key to making any lie believable.

Your Views: Voting glitch is another setback in public’s trust of government

I've never quite understood the national debate about getting government out of our bedrooms until election night 2013.

Your Views: Halloween on square was a treat

I want to thank the awesome businesses around the Gainesville square who handed out candy on Halloween. Your generosity made it a very festive experience for many children and adults, including myself and my two little superhero grandsons! Thank you very much!

Your Views: Immigration reform would boost economy

Citizens are concerned about the economy, the deficit and the decline of family values. Fixing our broken immigration system is a way to address these concerns in a positive way. Immigration reform will have a positive effect on our economy.

Your Views: Lions Club seeks support for Children’s Theater fundraiser

I want to take this opportunity to thank the Gainesville-Hall County community and even surrounding counties for their support of the Gainesville Lions Club. You have bought our mops and brooms, donated to our White Cane project which pays for eye surgeries and you have contributed to our fundraising endeavors over the years. The community we serve is the community that supports us.

Your Views: GOP behavior will come back to haunt party

Even with America's present distractions, problems and challenges, and Republicans' utter failure on the budget standoff, Republicans cannot be counted on to behave sensibly with the next budget negotiations. There are many things, however, which favor this not happening, the major one being the proximity of next year's elections.

Your Views: College’s former president thankful for community’s ongoing support

I believe I have written three letters to The Times over the years, one in which I tried to make the case that public schools can not do it alone and must have the support of the larger community in meeting the challenging needs and demands placed upon it.

Your Views: Obama’s place in history set by legacy of lies

As I survey the political landscape, I see what an unmitigated mess our country is in. I keep saying to myself this is all a terrible nightmare. Unfortunately, it is not a nightmare but reality.

Your Views: Health care mess shows we can’t spend our way to solutions

President John F. Kennedy said, "My fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country."

Your Views: Elected officials need to be held accountable to public

Your editorial this past Sunday was a perfect example of what the Founding Fathers had in mind when they spoke of the need for a free press in our country. We need to know when our elected officials take their election as permission to disregard their obligation to conduct the people's business in an open manner and as part of the public record.

Your Views: GHSA needs to level playing field in prep sports

You hear it all the time when you play Buford or Gainesville: "I just hope no one gets hurt."

Your Views: Americans need to be aware how our leadership is failing us

U.S. Rep. Allen Grayson of Florida compared the tea party to the KKK. I don't remember hearing anything about any tea party personnel hanging or beating any black folks, burning crosses or running around in white sheets.

Your Views: Gun shops near school raise concern

I am concerned about the opening of a new gun dealership very near Gainesville High School. From the door of the store to the GHS gymnasium measures about 900 feet. This new gun store is not the only gun store near GHS. If you go just a bit further down John Morrow Parkway, you will find another gun dealership.

Your Views: Obamas are spending tax money unwisely, alienating our allies

There's something terribly wrong in this country when we elect a president who clearly has little or no regard for the nation or people he is supposed to faithfully serve and protect. I don't know about the rest of you, but for myself, the arrogance and stubborn, selfish attitude of refusing to listen or consider other points of view pertaining to national policy, whether they differ from his own is obvious.

Your Views: Dangerous mailboxes are too close to edge of road

Hundreds of U.S. Postal Service mailboxes built and are being built weekly, which are completely surrounded by brick, concrete, cement, stone or iron, are all illegal (aren't they?) and very dangerous. They are being built on government property inches away from the road and less than 25 feet from the center of the road.

Your Views: More lies from the White House over voting case investigations

Here we go again, folks. A couple days ago, President Barack Obama spoke to an Al Sharpton audience spewing more lies that the GOP is trying to stop people from voting by requiring them to show an ID. Lie, lie, lie.

Your Views: Lula could use new blood, more reasonable rules

It is my hope that some new blood on the Lula City Council will bring an end to silly regulations like the one requiring a resident to pay a fee and to get the city's approval in order to have a yard sale on his own property. I know that part of the fee is refundable if the yard-saler cleans up his property to an inspector's satisfaction after the sale.

Your Views: Racism is used by Democrats to demonize their political foes

There is hardly a day that goes by when Democrats fail to use the term "racism" in some sort of capacity regarding conservatives. It is the current buzz word that they hope will keep them relevant in upcoming elections since they have very little else to hang their hat on: the train wreck of Obamacare, Benghazi, the IRS scandal, Lois Lerner, endless executive actions without congressional approval, and the list goes on.

Your Views: More guns aren’t a problem if those carrying them are legal

I am a gun owner with a concealed carry permit, and I think if more people had guns and were licensed to carry, we might have a safer city or community. My reason of thinking is if you possess such a permit, then you are less likely to commit a crime because you have paid the money for it and have no record or serious or violent crimes against you. We are basically law-abiding, gun-carrying people who are exercising our Second Amendment rights.

Your Views: Sprawl lowers costs and raises quality of life

Give me the sprawl. I love it. Hopefully, Hall County municipal fathers will attempt to get sprawl (according to the Hall County sprawl index published in The Times on April 12) down to 50 from its current 103.3.
