Global warming fears are just another way to control people

This is in response to a recent article by Joan King. In it, she sounded so exasperated, feeling like she'd written everything and all she could concerning global warming and yet some of us skeptics still don't get it. She talks of a consensus of scientists who are all on board with this theory. She also stated they had come to an agreement it is caused by man-made carbon emissions.

Stop criminals from crossing our borders

On July 1, The Times had a piece on Georgia House Bill 87. On July 3, there was another article declaring HB 87 as un-Christian.

History shows discrimination is just wrong

I appreciated the article in the July 3 editon of The Times, "Christian leaders struggle with immigration law." I noted that one of the persons you quoted said, "Laws are important."

Price of more than gas has skyrocketed

I noticed an item in the paper recently that caught my attention. It stated that Social Security was projecting a cost-of-living adjustment of 0.9 percent for this year. This, after figuring that the cost of living had not gone up at all the last two years. Talk about adding insult to injury.

Marriage is a sacrament that should be between man, woman

It is difficult for me to understand Cokie Roberts' explanations and justifications for her opinions of homosexual acceptance.

Political correctness forces Southern traditions to sidelines

Have you heard what Bill O'Reily said on Fox News recently? A school in New York City can't mention religion, so the children are singing "When the ants go marching in."

Counselor defends work at Community Service Center

I attended the recent public meeting of the Hall County commissioners, but did not speak due to time restraints.

Residents deserve to know how Hall commissioners made cuts

What was the process for deciding "who" and "what" got cut from the recently approved Hall County budget?

We need to elect people who believe in fiscal responsibility

I have seen a couple of articles where Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., has referred to tea party people as extremist. He is the third-leading Democratic senator and has held his office for about 12 years. Currently we have a financial crisis, an immigration crisis, Social Security is going broke, Medicare is going broke, our energy policy is a disaster, food prices are terrible, etc. Most of our congressmen have been there over 10 years and are doing a terrible job.

Commissioners’ actions made Hall County weak

One Hall County commissioner has indicated to me that he plans to "modify the tax bill to allow for people to donate to the programs that were cut." Here is my reaction to that commissioner's statement:

New leaders are needed in Hall, city governments

The financial health and well-being of this county and the city of Gainesville will get no better until new people step forward to run for the Hall County Board of Commissioners and the Gainesville City Council.

Red Rabbit buses provide a vital service for many in Hall

I am a faithful rider of the Red Rabbit. I write you today to ask you not to cut the Red Rabbit service in Hall County. In the newspaper, the article read "For the few folks who ride the Red Rabbit ... would get a ride with family, friends, churches, other charities or taxi cab."

Commissioners should help out, cut their own pay

I find it very interesting Commissioner Billy Powell portrays the attitude that if we cannot increase taxes, than we can fix those who impose it by cutting out things of theirs. Notice that the commissioners were not willing to take a cut in pay to help out.

Let Hall residents control more of community’s needs

I'm am tired of hearing and reading about government budget woes. Those in office have abused the system to the point that failure is inevitable.

Cut the weakest Hall workers rather than furlough everyone

I noticed two plus years ago that surrounding counties including Gwinnett and Forsyth were making severe cuts to their planning and building inspection departments.

Your Views: Health care law helped fill a need; change it, don’t scrap it

A lot of thought and planning went into the Affordable Care Act, and every group, including insurance companies, business groups, Republicans and Democrats, were all consulted to incorporate their suggestions.

Your Views: Hall’s ‘storage of junk’ law penalizes people needlessly

Looks like Hall County needs more money, so they send a helicopter over to see how many poor people they can rake over the fire with the illegal "storage of junk" law. That law was only made to rob the poor people. It is illegal according to the Constitution, but our commissioners don't care. We need to stand up and tell them to get rid of that law unless you love being robbed.

Your Views: Government’s intrusion into health care is beyond its powers

Recently, my 12-year-old grandson asked me why I didn't like President Barack Obama. I attempted, in vain, to explain in terms a 12-year-old could understand my objection to the liberal-progressive left.

Your Views: Benefits from health care law outweigh its flaws

Your Sunday editorial recommending a reboot of the ACA was thoughtful but misguided. As the editorial pointed out, the main resistance to the ACA is that no Republicans supported it. But that's what happens in a democracy. It's like saying that the Social Security Act of 1934 should be repealed because no Republicans supported it (which is a historical fact).

Your Views: Commissioners indeed failed us in funding libraries

Thank you, Paige Mellinger, for your letter to the editor "Support your library and the good it does a community" appearing Thursday in The Times.

Your Views: State board denies justice in murder case

After reading The Times' article regarding Tommy Lee Waldrip and the hideous crime he committed against the young Dawsonville man, Keith Evans, 23 years ago, I am still in disbelief of our so-called "justice" system.

Your Views: Support your library and the good it does a community

Another budget year and another disappointment for our library system and its patrons. Our county officials' spending on website redesign and an energy study, with unused results, instead of providing funding needed to take county agencies off of furlough toes the line of malfeasance, a word I learned from a children's picture book that I read at my library ("Olivia and the Fairy Princesses" by Ian Falconer).

Your Views: Owing a life to local doctors

I spent 60 years in newspapering in Anderson, S.C., Athens and The Atlanta Times, and 50 years in radio and television throughout the South. I write this to salute Gainesville and its vast medical community as nationally prominent in heart research. I owe my life to cardiologists there and couldn't dare name them all, but one, Dr. Jeffrey Marshall, has not only been a great doctor but a great mentor to let me pursue my career after suffering mightily.

Your Views: Hall County football is top notch

I retired from coaching after 15 seasons in the NFL. I started off coaching five seasons as a high school coach in New Mexico and in Fremont, Calif. The Hall County football teams are extremely well coached. I often stand just outside the fence watching our incredibly competent coaches work. Hall County is a perfect place for a retired coach to live if he wants high-quality football every Friday night during the high school football season.

Your Views: Murderers are cowards and don’t deserve a peaceful death

Here we go again, folks. Cormac J. Carney, a U.S. district judge, ruled California's death penalty unconstitutional. He called the death penalty an "empty promise that violates the Eighth Amendment's protection against cruel and unusual punishment." This was brought on by a death row inmate.

Your Views: Hall sales tax delay designed to get it passed

I vaguely remember when voting Republican meant you were virtually assured of candidates who supported policies that promoted limited government and lower taxation. Obviously, this is no longer the case.

Your Views: Nuclear power needed to keep state’s business climate healthy

In response to Joan King's column of July 1: I'm tired of reading and responding to her ill- and misinformed rants about nuclear power, and specifically, Georgia Power's Plant Vogtle nuclear units Nos. 3 and 4, now under construction.
