Your Views: Backers of tax vote should be truthful

If Hall County government/Chamber of Commerce/Hall Progress 2015 could be truthful about the SPLOST, the following is what they would say:

Your Views: Georgia senators wrong to bypass president with letter to Iran

Sens. Isakson and Perdue: As your constituent, I am writing to tell you how dismayed I am at your act of signing a letter to Iran, a foreign enemy country and its leaders, while our president is conducting diplomatic negotiations along with our allies to reduce, verify and contain Iran's nuclear program.

Your Views: Carbon tax plan is a win for the economy and for environment

While there are frequent conflicts between what is good for the environment and what is good for the economy, the carbon fee and dividend plan proposed by the Citizens Climate Lobby is a refreshing exception.

Your Views: Printed legal ads are still useful

The General Assembly considering removing legal ads from the legal county newspaper? No! Some folks don't have or can't use computers. Just cut out something on the useless list. Legal ads are on the useful list, I think.

Your Views: Sales tax will allow Hall County to widen Spout Springs Road

For many reasons, I am very much in favor of continuing the Hall County special purpose local option tax for another five years. But probably the biggest reason is that it would accomplish long overdue improvements for Spout Springs Road in my Flowery Branch community.

Your Views: Gainesville needs more green space, not more parking

A wonderful opportunity is waiting with open arms for the governments of Gainesville and Hall County. It's the piece of pavement now used for parking on the north side of the downtown parking deck and Brenau University.

Your Views: GHSA should fix lack of parity between public, private schools

For decades, students at the traditional public schools in Georgia have been denied the chance to win a state championship because the system overseen by the Georgia High School Association ignores the fact that there is no parity among traditional public schools, private schools and city schools.

I applaud plans for the appointment of a local citizens' oversight committee to carefully monitor expenditures in the next round of special purpose local option sales tax funding.

Your Views: Youth athletes would get boost from SPLOST

The ongoing referendum this month to extend the special purpose local option sales tax in Gainesville-Hall County offers an exciting opportunity for the children and youth of our community. If SPLOST passes, Gainesville will be able to launch Phase I construction of the city's first youth sports fields in more than 30 years.

Your Views: Voters deserve better choices on their ballots

I appreciate Jeff Casper's recent letter. He's right when he says voting for a president is like changing a light bulb. We voted repeatedly for illumination and each time we've been disappointed. Not just with President Barack Obama, but also George W. Bush, before him.

Your Views: Parker misses the facts; move to stop amnesty is vital to nation

In reading Kathleen Parker's Thursday column, "GOP is a tragedy in 52 acts," I find the usual liberal twisting of facts.

As chairman of Hall Progress 2015, I am writing to express my support for SPLOST VII. I want to encourage our community to make a strong showing at the polls. Early voting began on Feb. 23 and continues through March 13.

Your Views: Melting ice will flood coastal areas, but is that a deal breaker?

Thank you, editors of The Times, for publishing The Associated Press article "Antarctica's retreating ice may transform Earth" in Saturday's edition, Page 3D. What an understatement!

Your Views: Selma’s lesson still rings true: We should make our voices heard

Several weeks ago, we looked back at the historic march that began in Selma, Ala., in March 1965. This event was a painful time in our nation's history, but a time that we can all gather great strength from.

Your Views: A baker’s dozen buzzwords we ought to banish

Many people are like sheep concerning buzzwords. One participates and the rest follow the herd. Eventually, a buzzword becomes annoying, trite and ready for banishment.

Your Views: Future sales tax votes should be on fall ballots

The front page headline Sunday in The Times read "Where have all the voters gone?" Let's go back just a few months to the fall of 2014 when midterm elections were in the news. Recall The Times writing about how politicians in Hall County were concerned that SPLOST VII would not be passed by voters for a seventh time if SPLOST VII was placed on the November 2014 ballot?

Your Views: Bullying is hurtful at any age, even when aimed at principal

I read with concern the two recent items in The Times regarding alleged bullying at Myers Elementary (March 7 article, March 19 letter to the editor). Quite honestly, I was confused; I thought perhaps I had read the name of the school incorrectly, and even more confused when I read the principal involved in the articles. I started shaking my head, thinking,"Are you kidding me? Are they really accusing Beth Hudgins of dealing improperly with a situation so potentially hurtful?"

Your Views: GOP senators need to stop spewing hate

Mary Drummer is right on about Georgia's senators being wrong to have sent a letter to Iran. They are certainly overstepping their place and proving once again that they, of the Republican party, are incapable of sensibly leading this country's government.

Your Views: Principal at Myers Elementary is qualified to keep bullying incidents in check

I am writing in response to the article from March 7, "Bullying incidents test school policy in Hall County, Gainesville." As a parent of a child in elementary school, the subject is concerning to me. However, I am not worried at all because my child goes to Myers Elementary School. I'm not worried because I have 100 percent faith in my son's teacher and his principal to do the right thing for my child, and those in his class.

Your Views: Housing market still is pointed upward this year in Hall County

Your Views: Series on foster child care opened eyes to a serious issue

On more than one occasion, I have taken pen to paper to offer my criticism of your newspaper. It is expected that we subscribers will do that. When a newspaper does something that I feel is commendable, I will also offer my praise as well as extending my subscription another quarter.
