Gainesville grad Payne hopes to help Western Carolina to a league title

It's been four years since Gainesville High won its first Georgia High School Association state championship. Western Carolina University defensive back Fred Payne, a senior for the Red Elephants in 2012, is still fighting the same battle he fought just a few short years ago.

Clermont Cupcake Challenge scheduled for Sept. 17

The North Hall Lions Club Cupcake Challenge 5-kilometer road race and 1K run are Sept. 17, starting at W R Strickland & Sons Funeral Home at 260 Main Street in Clermont. The one-kilometer fun run begins at 7:30 a.m., while the 5K starts at 7:45 a.m.

Local golf: Wednesday Dogfight group plays Stableford scoring event at Chicopee Woods

The Wednesday Dogfights played a Stableford scoring game at Chicopee Woods Golf Course this week. The 'A' Flight winner was Roger Stapp with +7 individual points. Eric Awtry finished in second place with +5 points while Terry Clegg, James Roberts and Henry Komoto all tied for third with +4 individual points.

Nathan Williams closes with 1-under par to win City Golf Championship at Chattahoochee

Gainesville High graduate Nathan Williams fired a final-round 1-under par to capture the City Golf Championship on Sunday at the Chattahoochee Golf Club. He finished the three-day, 54-hole event with a score a 1-under par (215). Williams won by two strokes against Morgan Nix, who was 1 over for the weekend.

Spencer Ralston leads semifinal match in Ga. Amateur Championship

Recent Gainesville High graduate Spencer Ralston was 2 up through 15 holes against Georgia Tech signee Luke Schneiderjans before rain brought play to a halt during Saturday's action in the Centennial Georgia Amateur Championship at the Capital City Club-Brookhaven in Atlanta. In the other semifinal match, Colin Bowles leads Kris Mikkelsen.
