Michigan State and Kentucky tied at Achasta

A pair of back nine surges on Tuesday afternoon have two teams, Lindsey Solberg and Caroline Power of Michigan State and Heather Lott and Liz Breed of the University of Kentucky, atop the leaderboard on the opening day at the 2nd annual Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship at Achasta in Dahlonega.

Achasta Golf Course head professional Tom Fowler says his course is in tip-top condition for a field of top collegiate golfers in the National Golf Coaches Association Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship that opens today in Dahlonega.

This week: Top paddlers to compete on Lanier

Some of the nation's top paddlers and canoe teams will convene on Lake Lanier starting Thursday for the US Canoe and Kayak Sprint Nationals. The Lake Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club will be competing against clubs from Hawaii, Seattle, Oklahoma City, San Diego and Washington, D.C., among others. The LCKC is the defending national champions in the Sprint Nationals.

Lanier National Speedway would appear to be on its final leg. Track owner Donnie Clack held a meeting in May in which he outlined the grim financial prospects brought on by fewer drivers and low attendance. The 2011 schedule was trimmed and, in some cases, the prize money was reduced.
