Chestatee, Flowery Branch lifters lead Team Georgia
Chestatee and Flowery Branch student athletes dominated for Team Georgia Weightlifting at the National Junior Weightlifting Championships in Itasca, Ill., last weekend as they won the team titles in both the women's and men's division.
Local golf results: Roberts, Sexton, Lowery and Brown take 1st at Luna's Tuesday event
Joe Roberts, Tom Sexton, Tommy Lowery, and Cleve Brown took first place in the Luna's Tuesday golf group event at the Chattahoochee Golf Course this week. Second place went to the team of Jerry Johns, Richard Strickland, Bud Black, and Johnny Nix. Third place went to the team of Gene Weschler, Nelson Wright, Doug Van, and Stan Davidson Jr. Closest to the pin winners were Johns (Nos. 3 and 5), Roberts (No. 12) and Strickland (No. 17).
Future unclear for the struggling Lanier National Speedway
It's quiet at Lanier National Speedway. Once a local hub, drawing large crowds to see exciting races and special events, it has become more landmark than event venue. Allen sets new world record in bench press
C.J. Allen of Gainesville competed at the Southern Powerlifting Federation Record Breakers Meet in Gatlinburg, Tenn. and came home with a title and a new SPF world record in the Junior Men's equipped 275-pound bench press class. At a body weight of 265 pounds, Allen pressed 450 on his third lift.
