Dragonboat USA has strong showing at championship

On the first day of the 2010 ICF Dragonboat World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, all of the U.S. National Dragonboat team's boats in the senior division advanced to the finals with the exception of the 500-meter, 20-seat mixed division, which will run a semifinal today.

Weather delays opening round of Chicopee Championship

Rainy weather delayed the start of the Chicopee Golf Championship on Saturday by nearly two hours, and the wet course seemed to stretch the 7,040-yard, 18-hole course even longer for the competitors, as the ball would often stop dead in its tracks after hitting the ground.

Local golf: Roberts wins at Chicopee Woods

The DPG played matches on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday this week at the Chicopee Woods Golf Course. On Monday, James Roberts took first with a score of +6 and Dwight Miller was second with a +3. Dave Jetter placed third with a +2 and Terrence Dale was fourth with a +1.

Local golf: Davidsons win at Chattahoochee

The Luna's Tuesday Golf Group played at Chattahoochee Golf Course this week. First place went to the team of Nelson Wright, Stand Davidson Jr., Johnny Nix and Stan Davidson Sr. Steve Hill, Tommy Lowery, Al Raynes and Doug McMahan teamed up for second, while third place went to the team of Gene Weschler, Larry Miller, Chad Pierce and Cleve Brown.

College golf tourney coming to Achasta

The Hooters Women's Collegiate Team Championship is set to begin today at Achasta Golf Course in Dahlonega. Fifty-five two-person teams will be competing at the event, with each team consisting of players from the same university in a 54-hole stroke play tournament which concludes Thursday.

Malquist takes gold at Junior Olympics

Gainesville High graduate Paul Malquist won a US Track & Field Junior Olympics National Championship with the Lanier Running Club in the pole vault with a height of 15-feet, 9-inches on Sunday in Sacramento, Calif. Earlier in the week, Malquist won a bronze in the decathlon.

This week: Football practice gets underway for high schools

Football fans can take comfort that the season is quickly closing in. Just three days after the Atlanta Falcons opened up training camp in Flowery Branch, high school practice has also started. Also, the University of Georgia opens camp today, while defending ACC champion Georgia Tech opens practice Thursday.

Partrick moving forward with life

Grant Partrick can still deliver a serve across the net with a tremendous amount of force, and was clocked as high as 131 miles per hour last year as a senior on the tennis team at North Georgia College & State University. His forehand and backhand shots are also far ahead of the skill level of the average weekend warrior on the tennis court.
