Gainesville eighth-grader Spencer Ralston won the Southeastern Junior Golf Tour's Championship in the 12-13 year-old division at the Sugahatchee Country Club in Opelika, Ala. Ralston had a three-day total of two-under par, five strokes ahead of second place.

This week: Top paddlers to compete on Lanier

Some of the nation's top paddlers and canoe teams will convene on Lake Lanier starting Thursday for the US Canoe and Kayak Sprint Nationals. The Lake Lanier Canoe and Kayak Club will be competing against clubs from Hawaii, Seattle, Oklahoma City, San Diego and Washington, D.C., among others. The LCKC is the defending national champions in the Sprint Nationals.

Hope for Lanier Speedway

Lanier National Speedway would appear to be on its final leg. Track owner Donnie Clack held a meeting in May in which he outlined the grim financial prospects brought on by fewer drivers and low attendance. The 2011 schedule was trimmed and, in some cases, the prize money was reduced.
