City Championship golf tourney starts Friday

The 2012 City Championship will be held Friday through Sunday at Chattahoochee Golf Club. The cost is $50 per player in addition to applicable green fees and cart fees. The tournament is open to any golfer with an established USGA handicap and will be flighted based on handicap indexes.

Pruett honored for achievements

Lakeview Academy graduate David Pruett, a rising senior on the Lander University basketball team, was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court this week. The Honors Court recognizes student-athletes who excelled in academics during the 2011-12 season.

Rucker places 3rd at Jr. World Championships

Flowery Branch High graduate and University of South Carolina rising sophomore Erika Rucker earned her first international medal and hit a personal best twice in two days after taking bronze in the 400-meter dash at the 14th IAAF World Junior Championships held at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona, Spain.

Northeast Georgia tennis championships planned for August

The Northeast Georgia Championships Tennis Tournament will be held Aug. 14-19 at Longwood Tennis Center in Gainesville. Play will begin at 6 p.m. on weekdays, 9 a.m on Saturday, and 1 p.m. on Sunday.

Ty McCormack has set the bar high for himself in the Peachtree Road Race, even though it's not a race he trains for specifically. McCormack, a North Hall High grad, was the top finisher out of about 35,000 runners from Georgia in the 2011 Fourth of July race and the largest 10 kilometer race in the nation.

Local golf: Luna's group plays Chestatee

The Luna's Tuesday golf group played at Chestatee Golf Course in Dawsonville this week. First place went to the team of Randy Gordy, Richard Strickland, Tommy Lowery, and Chad Pierce. Royce Deaton, Jerry Johns, Stan Davidson Jr, and Jim Cornett came in second place, and Gene Weschler, Ken Chahoy, Tom Sexton, and Doug Van finished in third place. Closest to the pin winners were Bud Black (No. 3), Deaton (No. 7), Larry Miller (No. 11), Gordy (No. 15), and Sexton (No. 17).

Gainesville American Little League falls to Athens in district championship

The Gainesville American 10-11 year old Little League All Star team fell to Athens 10-0 in the District 10 championship game Friday at Lanier Point Park. Gainesville finished the season second in the district.

Gainesville Little League teams fall in District 10 tourney

The Gainesville American 10-11 Little League All-Stars lost 6-5 on Thursday night to Athens in the District 10 tournament, forcing a deciding game to crown the champion at 6:30 tonight at Lanier Point in Gainesville. The winner advances to the state tournament starting July 14 in Savannah.

The 8-and-under Clermont A's finished a successful season on Monday in Barrow County with a 20-3 win over Dawson County for the Dizzy Dean baseball District 6 championship. With the win, the team ended the season with a 27-10 record.
