After four weeks, Flowery Branch is still Hall County's best football team. The Falcons seem to play at a championship level in almost all phases of the game: their offense is balanced, they have excellent skill players both running and passing, and they have an ever-improving defense. Four other teams have a chance to be playoff teams, but all must continue to improve each week. It's important that these players remember, though, that they aren't ...
The Hall County schools have played 15 games in the first three weeks of the season, and Hall County's best team, Flowery Branch, is 3-0 against Class AAAA competition.
Clearly, Hall County's best team based upon two games against Class AAAA teams is Flowery Branch.
I use a simple formula to rate the Hall County football teams early in the year and that is the ratio of points scored against points allowed.
The regular season is over and only two Hall County teams move into the playoffs. Gainesville is the Region champ in 8-AAA and Flowery Branch as a No. 2 seed in 8-AAAA.
At the end of week 10, all Hall County teams have played nine games and had a bye week. Region 8-AAA teams Gainesville and Johnson have play-in games, with Gainesville at White County for the region title and the top seed in the Class AAA playoffs. Johnson plays Stephens County and if the Knights win, they become a No. 4 seed.
I watched Johnson play Oconee County last Friday night and I want to share with you some of my observations. I have known for a number of years, that the Knights had fewer players on their squad than their opponents.
Flowery Branch High and Gainesville High continue to perform at a championship level, the only loss between them was the Red Elephants' loss to Class AA's then top-ranked Buford in the first game of the season. Gainesville is significantly better than they were then as their freshman quarterback Deshaun Watson shows improvement each week.
Last Friday night my wife and I watched the White County Warriors and North Hall Trojans play a very competitive game. The contest was as good as advertised and the Brickyard was packed.
Each week I try and pick out the most interesting game played on Friday night by the Hall County teams.
Halfway through the season I have no doubt Flowery Branch has the best football team in Hall County.
During the first four weeks of the season, the seven public high schools in Hall County have played a total of 23 games.
I am going to make a couple of coaching observations I have been thinking about for a while.
At the end of week 2, we still have three undefeated teams in Hall County: Flowery Branch, which has been impressive in pitching two shutouts; West Hall which is coming off a winless season; and North Hall, which beat a very good Jefferson team last Friday and faces perennial power St. Pius X on Friday at the Brickyard.
Before moving to Gainesville in 1992 I had been a football coach for 28 seasons, four seasons in high school, one season at a junior college, three seasons at William and Mary, with Marv Levy and Lou Holtz, and five seasons at Ohio State with Woody Hayes. While working for Woody, I was the national recruiter and watched film on high school players from all over the United States. From 1976-1991 we coached in ...
Gainesville High School, like a lot of top high school teams around the country, has a very loyal alumni fan base.
