It's summer, which means it's time to hit the pool and the lake. If you or your children have a problem with water getting trapped in your ears, I've got the solution: Clear Ears. They're small sponge-like earplugs you put in your ears AFTER swimming. The plugs pull the water out of your ears in less than 10 minutes. You can find them at most drugstores or online at Cirrus Healthcare Products. By the way, this company also makes another product I really like. It's called EarPlanes. These cool earplugs help regulate the air pressure ...
Do you have debris stuck between the cracks of your wood deck? If so, here's the simplest solution I know on how to remove this stuff. Simply screw a large cup hook onto the end of a broom stick. Run the cup hook through the crack to remove the debris. You can also use the hook to hang up your broom when you're finished with it.
I travel quite a bit and I go through my fair share of airport security screenings. Here's a good tip to remember if you're traveling this summer. Put your most valuable items, like a laptop computer, on the security conveyor belt first. Always put your shoes on the conveyor belt last. It's common for people to miss the last thing they put on the belt and walk away without it. I can assure you that you won't forget your shoes!
Pickup trucks are great to have. Besides making you sexier, they're great for hauling stuff. One problem though is when your items slide toward the cab in the truck bed and you have to climb in the truck to retrieve them. The solution: make a "truck stick." As the name implies it's a long stick with a hook on the end. Just leave it in the bed of your truck and use it whenever your items slide away from you.
If you're ever eating out in a fancy restaurant and you can't figure out which bread plate and water glass is yours, remember this: BMW. No, I'm not referring to the car. I'm talking about bread, meat, water. Just as the letters are arranged, bread is on the left, meat is in the middle and your water glass is on the right. I was eating in a fancy restaurant a couple of weeks ago and one of the people at my table couldn't figure out which water glass was hers. My BMW tip impressed her ...
I hate "shirt puckers." What's a shirt pucker? When you've had a shirt on a hanger for a long time, puckers are created in the shoulder of the shirt. The simplest way to get rid of the puckers is to spray them with Downey Wrinkle Release while you're wearing the shirt. Just use your hand to smooth the pucker.
The microwave is the easiest way to brown ground beef. A lot of you already know this, but here's a tip you probably don't know. Before microwaving, place the beef in a microwave-safe colander and then place the colander in a bowl. When microwaving, the fat from the beef will drain through the colander and collect at the bottom of the bowl. Genius. Contributed by Jo Holt.
I've said this before, but it's worth repeating. When you read this column I know that your first thought will be, "How can this tip help me?" Let your second thought be, "Can this tip help someone I know?" Share the love, baby.
Duct tape has a number of medical uses - I'm serious. Here are two examples. First, when children get chicken pox, some parents put mittens on their children's hands to keep them from scratching. Wrap duct tape around the end of their mittens to keep them from pulling the mittens off. Second, use duct tape and plastic garbage bags to keep casts dry when you're taking a shower.
I love debunking old tips. For example, there have been e-mails going around for years stating that the best way to peel a banana is from the bottom. The tip states that by doing this you don't get any of the strings. Baloney. You get just as many strings as if you'd peeled it normally. Word of caution: most of the chain mail e-mail tips I've gotten over the years have been bogus.
The digital video recorder, also known as a DVR, is one of the greatest inventions of all time. It allows you to record multiple TV shows at the same time and even allows you to pause and replay live TV. TiVo came out with the first DVR in 1999. Today you can get the DVR functionality from your cable company or satellite service. A dilemma that a lot of people have is that they have a DVR in their bedroom but it will wake them up at night when the device's harddrive either turns on or shuts down. If ...
What do you do if you spill a bottle of cooking oil on the floor? First you pour some flour over the spill and let it sit for a couple of minutes. The flour will absorb most of the oil, and you can simply sweep it up with a dust pan and broom. Finally, use window cleaner and paper towels to remove the remaining oil.
OK folks, it's time for a duct tape tip: If you have a young toddler, put a piece of duct tape over their shoe laces so they'll stay tied while the child is playing. You'll also be educating the child on the value of duct tape. You can't start too young.
