Thompson: This shower head saves water and cash

There's a really cool shower head out now that you need to see. It's called the Evolve shower head. What makes it so cool? Well, when you turn it on it runs until the water warms up to 95 degrees. At that point the shower head automatically turns off. The benefit of this is that it eliminates the wasted water from between the time the water has heated up until you get in the shower. Even if you're not into water conversation, (but you should be), it's a neat gadget because it lets you know when ...

Thompson: Don’t veer for deer — just slam on your brakes

There's a safety campaign out now and its slogan is, "Don't veer for deer." Good advice. I personally don't think you should veer ever. A lot of roll-over accidents are caused by people veering to avoid a car that quickly pulls in front of them. This happened to a good friend of mine last week while he was driving up to Ohio to visit relatives. A car swerved in front of him and he swerved to avoid it. His Tahoe rolled twice, but fortunately no one was injured. My safety slogan is, "Don't veer for anything ...

Thompson: Save your dry-erase board with this easy fix

Have you ever written on a white board with a permanent marker? I have and it's a sickening feeling. Well, fear no more. If you make this mistake, simply take a dry-erase marker and scribble over the permanent marker and then erase. It works like magic. This technique also works with stains on your white board caused by dry-erase marks that have stayed on too long.

Thompson: Stinky feet? These socks help fight smell

Do your feet stink? Here's a product from Duluth Trading Co. that might help. They're called the X-Static Socks. These socks not only wick away moisture from your feet, but they are also made with a strong anti-microbial yarn that fights odor. These socks actually kill 99.9 percent of the bacteria that causes odor.

Thompson: Special IV can pump life back into your tree

I recently pointed out how you need to keep your live Christmas tree well watered. If the tree's water reservoir goes dry, the bottom of the tree will close up and it won't accept any more water. If this happens, your tree will start losing its needles and will become a fire hazard. OK, let's say that hypothetically your husband forgets to water the tree for several days and the bottom of the tree closes up. What can you do besides remove the decorated Christmas tree from the stand and re-cut the bottom of it? I've ...

Safety knife sheds light on cutting

I have discovered the best utility knife in the world - at least in my humble opinion. It's the Rapid Edge with the Saf-T-Vue light.

Thompson: Built-in lights make these gloves genius

I've never done a tip on a pair of gloves, but these gloves are special. They're made by Mechanix, a company that is well respected for making the best work gloves in the world. They're so good that most NASCAR crew members use them. The pair of gloves that I'm going to tell you about today are special because they have built-in LED lights on them. The LED lights put out a bright 10,000 lumens and allow you to see into dark places like the recesses of your car engine. Every mechanic and weekend warrior ...

Thompson: Tired of crooked picture frames? This tip will fix that

Here's a great tip on how to keep pictures on your walls level. On the back side of the picture, insert straight pins into the four corners. Clip off the heads of the pins leaving about a quarter inch sticking out. Put the picture on the wall and position it. When the picture is level, push the pins into the drywall. No more re-leveling the picture!

Thompson: Beware of bogus tips from the Internet

I want to start today's column by thanking all of you who have been sending me tips. Without your assistance, it would be very difficult to write this column each week. If a tip I receive is not intuitively obvious, I'll test it for legitimacy. Probably half of the tips I get turn out to be bogus. Here are two that I recently received that fall into that category.

Thompson: One simple call can save you phone time

Do you hate getting calls where the caller ID shows, "Private Number" or "Unknown?" Odds are it's either a sales call or something worse. Here's a neat trick to block these types of calls. Simply dial *77 on your phone. The service will automatically block them. To turn the service off, simply dial *87. Check with your phone service provider to see if there's a charge. (Whatever the charge, it's worth it!)

Thompson: Longer shirts help plug that crack

Does your father or husband suffer from "plumbers' butt"? This is the condition where a man's T-shirt is too short. When they bend over, the world gets to see part of their backside. It's not a pretty sight. Here's the solution. Got to Duluth Trading, where they have special T-shirts designed to combat this problem. The T-shirts have an extra three inches in length! (I'm just doing my part to make Gainesville a better place to live).

THOMPSON: Online bill pay could save you from a scam

Do you still write checks by hand each month? If so, you're not alone. It was recently reported that more than 90 percent of Americans still write checks by hand.

I was actually shocked by this percentage. I personally love online bill pay. It has made a chore I used to hate into something that's a breeze. If you're afraid to try it, go to your bank's local office and have them show you how it works. It's very secure.
