Nathan’s Famous hot dogs come to Oakwood

POSTED: November 7, 2007 5:05 a.m.

A little bit of Coney Island came to Oakwood on Friday as the owners of Bruster’s Ice Cream introduced Nathan’s Famous hot dogs to the market.

The ice cream shop at 3204 Atlanta Highway now offers the same tube steak made famous in the annual hot dog eating contest held each July 4.

"We’ve been around since 1916 with the same recipe," said Oliver Powers, a representative of Nathan’s Famous. "It’s all beef, with natural spices and high garlic content."

While one Nathan’s hot dog seem quite satisfying, it has become the stuff of champions of competitive eating.

During the 92nd annual Coney Island contest on July 4, six-time champion Takeru Kobayashi was beaten by Joey Chestnut, who won by eating a world record-breaking 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes.

Chestnut and Kobayashi eat their hot dogs plain, but Powers recommends a bit of spicy mustard and no ketchup.

In addition, the lineup include options for chili and slaw, as well as crinkle-cut fries.

Store manager Sharon Ferguson said the Nathan’s name, made famous by the contest and in supermarkets, first appeared on the store’s front awning three weeks ago.

"Ever since, we’ve had folks come up asking for a hot dog," she said. On Friday, the wait was over and a steady stream of customers came walking and driving up for a wiener.

"A lot of our customers wanted something for lunch, dinner or an early snack," said Russ Clark, owner of the Bruster’s in Oakwood.

There are five Bruster’s locations now co-located with Nathan’s. Clark’s Oakwood store is the first in Hall County.
