Badge and Bar: Gainesville man indicted on attempted rape charges

POSTED: May 15, 2014 12:38 a.m.

A Gainesville man was indicted on charges of attempted rape by a Hall County grand jury in April.

David Eugene Waters, 48, is accused of allegedly victimizing a woman on Oct. 3, 2012, in Gainesville.

He is also accused of aggravated sodomy, misdemeanor sexual battery and battery.

According to the indictment, he struck and bruised the victim, and took “substantial steps toward the commission of rape.” The case was investigated by the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.

An arraignment in Superior Court has not been scheduled, according to court records, and Waters has posted bond at the Hall County Jail.

Lawrenceville man accused in shooting indicted in chase

A Lawrenceville man accused in an October shooting at Ridgecrest apartments in Gainesville has been formally accused in state court on charges stemming from a December police chase on Interstate 985.

Ronta Garner, 33, as well as Shamarcus Grimes, 26, of Lawrenceville have not been indicted in the Oct. 30 shooting that injured 22-year-old Quavis Carruth. He was shot in the pelvis and the hand, resulting in “disfigurement and requiring surgery,” according to arrest warrants.

The two men are also implicated in an assault on two women and a toddler the same night as the shooting at the apartment complex.

Both men evaded custody for a few months. Grimes was taken into custody in January by the U.S. Marshals Service Southeast Regional Task Force.

After his unsuccessful run from law enforcement, Garner was slapped with numerous traffic charges: speeding, fleeing and eluding, no license, no insurance, no tag, failure to maintain lane, running a red light, misdemeanor obstruction, driving with no helmet and reckless driving.

He was formally accused in state court on April 29, and a subsequent court date has not been set.
