Your Views: Media didn’t tell whole story concerning team owner’s gaffe

POSTED: May 9, 2014 1:00 a.m.

I really think the media has missed the real story in dwelling on the racist remarks by Clippers owner Donald Sterling, caught, by the way, during a private moment. That conversation caused a lot of outrage, justifiably so. Even those of us who grew up in the South have rarely heard that low level of disgusting commentary. But if we’re honest with ourselves, we know we all have at one time or another.

Indeed, what we are learning from this coverage is a backstory that is much more worthy of outrage, and something downright un-American: Under Sterling’s watch, the Clippers may have purposefully lost games to enhance their draft position.

If the NBA forces Sterling to sell the team (which he bought for $12.5 million about 30 years ago) for the $1 billion he stands to make, it’s all tax free. Our country feels no shame that tax laws already advantage capital gains and inherited earnings over labor earnings. That’s bad enough. But this guy may qualify as eligible for involuntarily converted property loophole and not pay Uncle Sam any taxes whatsoever (on some $900-plus million profit).

And it’s not enough that he has this girlfriend while still married. No shame there. Nope, the transcript also reveals that he condones the open nature of the mistress relationship. Apparently, from the lack of squawk, lots in our society don’t find that outrageous.

The political correctness crowd has given this story legs because of the person of Donald Sterling — rich and white, owner of a sports team (a favorite target) and male. But the sick babblings of this old man are actually not news. The real story is that which was not deemed newsworthy by the popular press (by society): The real story is the revelation of how tepid our society’s sense of right is, how complete is our lack of shame.
