Senior Health and Nutrition Day offers information, fun

POSTED: May 5, 2014 12:08 a.m.

Senior adults can enjoy a day of fun activities and learning thanks to Legacy Link and Lakeshore Mall.

The two entities came together to sponsor the free program, Senior Health and Nutrition Day, specifically for seniors, as well as people with disabilites and their friends and family.

Legacy Link previously held informative seminars for seniors once a month at the mall but wanted to expand them into a series of quarterly events that could reach more people.

“We decided that instead of doing the one-hour presentation that we were doing for health and wellness, we would extend it to three hours into a more informative program,” said Joan Knight of Legacy Link in Gainesville. “We want to get more people involved and have a better program.”

The new program’s event on Tuesday offers presentations on healthy lifestyles from guest speakers of local organizations, including the YMCA, The Guest House, Frances Meadows Aquatic Center and the Northeast Georgia Senior Resource Connection.

Additionally, attendees can enjoy demonstrations of tai chi and Zumba and a performance from the North Hall High School Jazz Band.

Snacks, door prizes and gift certificates, and a 20 percent senior shopping discount from Belk department store are also available.

Seniors and those with disabilities will be able to get information on different Legacy Link services and resources at the event.

In addition to the guest speakers, Knight said tables will be set up that attendees can visit to ask questions and gather informational materials.

“I would like to get as many people to come and participate as possible, because it’s going to be a great event,” said Knight. “We’ve got a lot of great speakers, and it’s just going to be a really fun day. I’m looking forward to it.”

The event happens 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the area around the fountain inside Lakeshore Mall, 150 Pearl Nix Parkway, Gainesville.
