Your Views: Columnist, bishop express true concerns over state gun laws

POSTED: May 3, 2014 12:52 a.m.

Thank you for printing the column by Tom Crawford in Wednesday’s paper. His thoughtful article about the dangers of guns in public places was refreshing.

Most refreshing this week on the same subject was a letter from the Diocese of Atlanta Bishop Bob Wright notifying that the Episcopal churches in Middle and North Georgia will not allow the carrying of guns into their places of worship. Those who do will be charged with a misdemeanor and fined $100. The only exception is an on-duty police officer.

In his letter, Bishop Wright stated that he made this decision based on the teachings of Jesus. He wrote, “This matter and, I hope, this policy afford us yet another opportunity to live the words we pray each week.” He closed his letter with “In the name of the Prince of Peace.”

A house of worship should be a safe and comforting place, not a place where anyone fears for their life.
