FBES places second in science olympiad

Flowery Branch Elementary School placed second in the Science Olympiad hosted by Martin Technology Academy of Math and Science. The fourth- and fifth-grade students will compete May 17 in the State Science Olympiad at Kennesaw State University.

Flowery Branch Elementary School fourth- and fifth graders competed in 18 events and finished in second place in the first-ever Science Olympiad hosted by Martin Technology Academy of Math and Science.

Competition categories ranged from knowledge of weather, rocks, simple machines and constellations to hands-on activities, including bridge building, rocketry, chemistry and engineering. The students will compete May 17 in the State Science Olympiad at Kennesaw State University.

The competition’s results and categories are as follows:

* First: Aliyah Hunt and Ninette Ohrenberg in disease detectives; Aliyah Hunt and Jaclyn Minter in mystery architecture; and Shawn Smith and Juliana Zuluaga in map reading.

* Second: Evan Hutchinson and Bryanna McCrystal in bridge building; Carlyn Kirby and Juana Prieto in crime busters; Ashlee Armand and Connor Walker in simple machines; and Aliyah Hunt and Darren Schultz in what went by.

* Third: Wesley LeCroy and Darren Schultz in simple machines; Jaclyn Minter and Connor Walker in straw tower; and Bryanna McCrystal and Warren Paintsil in weather or not.

Other team members are McKenzie Fortner, Leonardo Nunez, Jorja Powell and Amanda Smith.
