University of North Georgia debate team places second in national competition recently

The University of North Georgia debate team placed second in the National Compreshensive Debate Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.

The University of North Georgia debate team finished in second place at the National Comprehensive Debate Tournament in Indianapolis, Ind.

The team also secured high-placing berths in several divisions and an individual competition.

Sponsored by Pi Kappa Delta, the competition pitted 60 colleges and universities against each other for the debate competition, with 80 institutions participating overall in debate and other events. The 43 wins posted by the UNG debate team at the tournament also established a university record.

Pablo Picazo-Garcia of Gainesville, a senior majoring in social science, advanced to the “Elight Eight” in Novice International Public Debate Association, or one-on-one-debate.

Matt McElveen of Flowery Branch, a junior majoring in communication, and Justin Franklin of Gainesville, a sophomore majoring in communication, advanced to the “Sweet 16” in Novice Parliamentary Debate.

Joshua Keith of Gainesville, a sophomore majoring in business administration; Anthony Harden of Gainesville, a senior majoring in accounting & law; and Robert Johnson of Jefferson, a sophomore majoring in business administration, advanced to the “Sweet 16” in JV Parliamentary Debate.

Fernando Gonzalez of Flowery Branch, a sophomore majoring in English, and Maria Palacios of Gainesville, a junior majoring in finance, advanced to the “Sweet 16” in Varsity Parliamentary Debate.

Other debate team members who partipated in the competition are: Chase Yarbrough of Clermont, a sophomore majoring in media studies; Ashlee Rose of Gainesville, a freshman majoring in business administration; Andre Gonzales of Jefferson, a sophomore majoring in business; and Cale Hatch of Gainesville, a sophomore majoring in journalism.
