Lanier Tech’s Byers named technical instructor of 2014

POSTED: April 25, 2014 1:04 p.m.

David Byers, a dental hygiene instructor at Lanier Technical College’s Oakwood campus, was named the Technical College System of Georgia’s Instructor of the Year at a Thursday night banquet for the system’s top educators and students.

He received the Rick Perkins Award for Excellence in Technical Instruction, which aims to honor instructors who make significant contributions to technical education through innovation and leadership in their fields, and a $1,000 check.

"David Byers is committed to providing his students at Lanier Technical College with the knowledge and skills that they need to succeed in their dental careers," said system commissioner Ron Jackson. "He is a very gifted educator who deserves to be recognized as the best of Georgia’s many great technical college instructors.

"David has the respect of the entire Technical College System of Georgia and we are proud to honor him as our 2014 instructor of the year."

Selection for the Rick Perkins award begins with the naming of the top technical education instructor at each of the 24 system colleges and the technical division at Bainbridge State College, which is part of the University System of Georgia. Regional competitions follow until only nine finalists remain.

In April, a panel of judges interview the finalists and choose the instructor of the year. The winner earns the highest marks in areas such as teaching experience, innovation in the classroom, leadership and civic involvement.

For the next year, Byers will serve as the system ambassador for technical education instruction and will make appearances around the state to speak about technical education. In addition, he will be honored at the Georgia General Assembly and receive a personal commendation from the governor.
