Movie filming scenes at Amicalola Park

POSTED: April 23, 2014 11:36 p.m.

Amicalola Falls State Park is the backdrop for a new movie starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte.

“Walk in the Woods” began filming this week. It is an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s memoir   that chronicles his hike of the Appalachian Trail to rediscover America after spending nearly two decades living in England.

In addition to Dawsonville, scenes will be shot in Atlanta and Lawrenceville, according to casting calls in search of Boy Scouts, hikers, Civil War re-enactors and lodge guests.

The notice by Catrett Locke Casting for Amicalola Falls Lodge announced a need for individuals “who love lodge life and revel in the great outdoors.”

The agency previously handled local casting for the Hunger Games franchise, which filmed parts of the third and fourth installments in western Dawson County.

Christie Haynes, president of the Dawson County Chamber of Commerce and office of tourism development, said she is excited to have the film industry back in town.

“Filming in Dawson County brings increased local revenues, shows off our amenities and natural beauty and increases tourism interest,” she said. “The state of Georgia, as well as our community, has made great strides in becoming a filming destination.

“We have experienced great success with previous filming of major motion pictures such as ‘Trouble with the Curve’ and ‘The Hunger Games.’ We continue to be attractive to the film industry due to our diversity of filming locations and accessibility to Atlanta.”

Georgia has been one of the country’s leading locations for Hollywood film production for a several years, thanks in part to state tax breaks and other incentives.
