Horse riders from across the region gathered Saturday morning to show their skills at the New Classic Horse Show at the Chicopee Woods Agricultural Center in Gainesville.

Also called the Dressage and Combined Training Show, the show featured horses and their riders performing dressage and horse jumps. Dressage (pronounced dress-ahhzh) involves training a horse to execute precise movements and is among the equestrian events included in the Olympic games. Many often describe dressage as "horse ballet," and some dressage events are performed to music.

"We try to get kids of all ages and adults to come compete," said Sara Juricek, one of the show’s organizers.

The show on Saturday morning was just one of the many shows that is held at Chicopee Woods as part of the Georgia Dressage and Combined Training Association series.

"There are eight shows a year," said Juricek.

Many of the participants Saturday morning were children. Ashley Dover, 9, of Cumming was one of them. She came to compete in dressage and jumping with her horse, Monsieur Bleu.

"I decided to come so I could win ribbons, and help myself become better, and have some fun, " said Dover. She said this weekend’s event was not her first time competing in a horse show.

"I decided it would be very fun," said Anna Tootle, 9, of Alpharetta, who was competing with her horse, Cricket. This was her first time competing in this particular kind of horse show but she said she plans on maybe participating in another one in the future.

The next show will be on Nov. 8 and is free to the public to attend, according to Carrie Rhodes, also an organizer of the show.
