High school scoreboard: April 16

Chestatee’s boys and girls tennis teams both secured a spot in the Class AAAA state tournament with 3-0 sweeps of Eastside on the opening day of the Region 8-AAAA tournament on Wednesday morning in Danielsville.

For the boys, Reed Johnson and Austin Passmore earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles to start the day, followed by a 6-1, 6-2 win from Logan Gruenenfelder and Ethan Kapiloff at No. 2 doubles. Tyler Burgess secured the team win at No. 1 singles for the War Eagles.

The boys face Madison County at 11 a.m. today in the region semifinals.

Haley King/Grace Brown led the Lady War Eagles with a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 doubles, Lily Kiang won 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, and Adasery Osorno clinched the team win with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles.

The Chestatee girls take on Lumpkin County in the region semifinals at 11 a.m. today in Danielsville.

REGION 8-AAAAA: Flowery Branch and Gainesville will face each in both boys and girls matches in the region finals today in Flowery Branch. The girls matches will begin at 1 p.m., with the boys matches set to begin at 3 p.m.

For Flowery Branch, the girls started the day with a 3-0 win against Cedar Shoals thanks to wins from Nicole Morris, Durden Smith and Brooke Kane/Breanna Benton. The Lady Falcons then defeated Clarke Central 3-0 with victories from Smith, Kane/Benton and Ashley Coleman/Kaia Clark.

The boys opened with a 3-0 win over Loganville with wins from Beau Millwood, Watson Lewis and Taylor Fiorello/Clay King. Millwood earned his second win of the day as the boys beat Clarke Central 3-0 in the second match. Phillip Correa and Quang Cao/Austin Higgs also won for the Falcons against Clarke Central.

Gainesville’s girls had a bye in the first round before beating Heritage 3-0. Georgia Summer, Katherine Wright and Morgan Mercer/Suzanne Smith all earned wins for the Lady Red Elephants.

The Gainesville boys team swept Cedar Shoals 3-0 in the first round with wins from Graham McKinnon, Roan Thompson and Reagan Williams/Nick Dillard. In the second round, the Red Elephants came away with a 3-1 victory over Heritage thanks to wins from McKinnon, Davis Brown and Trevor Munn/Charles Calkins.

REGION 7-AAA: The North Hall boys swept West Hall and White County 3-0 in the Region 7-AAA tournament on Wednesday at Alberta Banks Park in Flowery Branch.

In the first round, Jackson Davis, Matt Booth/Paxton Gillespie and Houston Smith/Josh Tu earned wins against West Hall.

Against White County, Davis, Dalton Patterson and Dawson Smith/Reid Lattanzi earned wins for the Trojans.

The Lady Trojans also advanced in the tournament with 3-0 wins against Fannin County and Banks County.

North Hall’s boys and girls face Buford in the region finals beginning at 4 p.m. today in Flowery Branch.

REGION 8-AA: The Jefferson girls took the Region 8-AA title and will serve as a No. 1 seed in the Class AA state tournament with a third-set tiebreaker at No. 2 doubles to decide the championship match against Washington-Wilkes.

Cailyn Diianni won 7-6, 6-0 for the Lady Dragons, while Olivia Yates/Charley Beatty won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Rheagan Wessels/Kadi Perry earned a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 win at No. 2 doubles.

Earlier in the day, Jefferson swept Social Circle 3-0 with wins from Diianni, Yates/Beatty and Wessels/Perry.


GAINESVILLE 19, SALEM 0: Anthony Carrera hit two home runs with four RBIs for the Red Elephants on Wednesday.

Michael Gettys had a grand slam and five RBIs for Gainesville (16-6, 10-2 Region 8-AAAAA). Caleb Whitenton finished with three hits, one a home run, and three RBIs, and Sims Griffith had two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs. Michael Curry had three hits and a pair of RBIs.

Whitenton earned the win from the mound.

The Red Elephants play host to Heritage at 5:55 p.m. on Friday in Gainesville.

WEST HALL 11, BANKS COUNTY 1: Lincoln Stubbs went 3 for 3 with a pair of RBIs for the Spartans (15-7, 11-6, Region 7-AAA) on Wednesday in Oakwood.

Cameron Johnson was 2 for 3 with two RBIs for West Hall, and Cam Warner was 2 for 3 with an RBI. Zach English finished 2 for 4.

Will Simmons earned the win pitching with 12 strikeouts over five innings.

The Spartans play host to East Hall on Friday in Oakwood.

DAWSON COUNTY 5, NORTH HALL 3: Logan Burt pitched a complete game for the Tigers, striking out 13, walking five and allowing four hits on Wednesday in Dawsonville.

Luke Martin led Dawson County at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance. Levi Whitmire, Brody Chester and Colton Chester each tallied two hits.

Brock Wingo was 2 for 3 at the plate to lead North Hall. Andrew Smith, Lincoln Hewett and Taber Mongero each scored a run for the Trojans, while Mongero and McCoy Savage each drove in a run.

The Tigers visit White County tonight in Cleveland. North Hall visits Buford on Friday.

WHITE COUNTY 2, EAST HALL 1: Stetson Gearin went 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs to power the Warriors on Wednesday in Gainesville.

Spencer Adams went 2 for 4 for White County (15-6, 10-6 Region 7-AAA), and Joel Pritchett earned the win pitching with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings.

The Warriors play host to Dawson County tonight in Cleveland.

JACKSON COUNTY 6, EAST JACKSON 0: Nick Corso finished 3 for 3 with a double, a stolen base and two runs scored for the Panthers on Wednesday in Jefferson.

Travis Vickers went 2 for 3 with a stolen base and a run scored for Jackson County (16-6, 7-4 Region 8-AAA), while Cal Tolbert had an RBI and a run scored. Colby Cole went 1 for 2 with a double and a run scored.

Jackson County’s Andrew Fogarty pitched the complete game for the win with 11 strikeouts.

The Panthers visit East Jackson on Friday in Commerce.

CLARKE CENTRAL 4, FLOWERY BRANCH 3: The Falcons fell to 13-7 and 8-4 in Region 8-AAAAA on Wednesday in Athens.

Flowery Branch visits Loganville on Friday.


JOHNSON BOYS 5, MADISON COUNTY 1 (Tuesday): Barut Perez recorded a hat trick and an assist to lead the Knights on Tuesday in Oakwood.

Luis Deltoro had two goals and two assists for Johnson (15-0, 7-0 Region 8-AAAA), and Fabian Abarca added an assist.

ATHENS ACADEMY BOYS 2, LAKEVIEW ACADEMY 1 (PKs, Tuesday): Cameron Kayne scored the lone goal for the Lions on Tuesday.

Lakeview Academy (6-6, 3-3 Region 8-A) plays host to Towns County tonight in Gainesville.
