Chestatee girls finish second in Region 8-AAAA track championships

MONROE – The Chestatee girls’ track and field team claimed a second straight runner-up finish in the Region 8-AAAA meet on Wednesday, finishing second to region champion Lanier High.

The Chestatee boys finished fourth in the region meet, with the Lanier boys also claiming the region championship.

A total of four Chestatee runners claimed individual region championships on Wednesday night, including three girls. Sarah Beth English won the 3200-meter run, building on her third-place finish in the Hall County Championships last month. Teammates Abbey Cliché finished second in the event on Wednesday. Kim Hylton won in the 300-meter hurdles and Maggee Wilson finished first in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:46.53.

On the boys’ side, Jack Carnes won region titles in both the 1600- and 3200-meter runs. In the 1600, Carnes won by nearly five seconds over Austin Vonkutzleban of Walnut Grove, when he finished with a time of 4:47.06.

Lumpkin County’s boys team finished eighth in the region meet.

In total, 11 Chestatee runners (7 girls, 4 boys) qualified for the Class AAAA Sectional Meet, held April 26 at Carrollton High School. Following the sectional meet, the girls’ state meet will be held on May 3, while the boys’ meet will be held May 10.
