'Twelve Angry Men' decide teen's fate in front of audience

Habersham Community Theatre to perform stage classic

POSTED: April 17, 2014 1:00 a.m.

After an 18-year-old man from a slum neighbor stood trial on the charges of fatally stabbing his father, 12 men head into the jury room to decide the teenager’s fate.

The proceeding deliberations is the focus of the upcoming play “12 Angry Men” at the Habersham Community Theater.

Opening Friday night, actors will tell the story of 12 jurors determining a man’s guilt or innocence, knowing a guilty verdict will be accompanied by a mandatory death sentence.

In the well-known story — which starred Henry Fonda in the 1975 film — most of the jurors have decided the teenager is guilty. The majority of men plan to return the verdict without taking time for discussion, with the sole exception of Juror 8 (played by Fonda), who is the only “not guilty” vote in a preliminary tally. Juror No. 8 explains too much is at stake for him to go along with the verdict without at least talking about it first. His vote annoys the other jurors, especially Juror 7 who has tickets to a baseball game that evening; and Juror 10 who believes most people from slum backgrounds are more likely to commit crimes.

Each juror reveals his or her own character as the various testimonies are re-examined. Tempers get short, arguments grow heated and the jurors become 12 angry men.

To see how the action is played out, watch the performances at 7:30 p.m. April 18-19, 24-25 and 26 and 2 p.m. April 20 and 27. The play is at 1370 Washington St. in Clarkesville.

In the lead roles are Jack Molnar, Doug Henry and Chris Parker while Skip Bassler, Ben Cusato, Todd Cusato, Jim McCarthy, Lee Mulkey, Jeff Skelton, Don Smith, Westley Stokes, Stephen Shouppe and Robert Wilson fill out the cast.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $8 for children and full-time students. They may be purchased by calling 706-839-1315 or visiting www.habershamtheater.org.
