Absentee ballots go in the mail for May 20 primary

POSTED: April 5, 2014 12:08 a.m.

Hall County has begun mailing the first batch of absentee ballots for the May 20 primary election.

But voters still have time to request an application to receive an absentee ballot by calling or visiting the elections office, or downloading one from the Secretary of State’s website, sos.ga.gov.

According to the Hall County Elections Office, about 90 absentee ballots were dropped in the mail Friday night.

“I would think that number would grow,” Hall County Director of Elections Charlotte Sosebee said. “Normally, we receive requests for about 2,000 ballots. So, hopefully, that number will grow.”

She added that the lack of requests so far may be a result of the primary schedule moving up this year.

Meanwhile, Georgians are now being offered paperless voter registration options that Secretary of State Brian Kemp expects to save time and money.

“We did this because Georgians deserve to be able to register to vote or change their information with as much ease as possible,” Kemp said in a statement. “This not only will provide benefits to the voter, but also for all 159 Georgia counties.”

Georgia voters with a valid state driver’s license may access online registration through the “My Voter Page” on the Secretary of State’s website. Android mobile users can now access the “GA Voter” application, which is expected to launch soon on the Apple platform.

“We’re real excited about that,” Sosebee said, adding that online registration helps to streamline and advance access to the ballot box.

Voters also can check their registration status, polling locations and retrieve a sample ballot from the website.
The voter registration deadline is April 21.

Early voting in Hall County begins April 28 and runs through May 16. There are 94,596 registered voters in the county, according to Sosebee.
