Lula prepares for May 20 election

POSTED: March 30, 2014 11:12 p.m.

Lula officials are gearing up for a special election to replace City Councilman Norman Harrop, who is preparing for a move of his own.

Qualifying for the May 20 election is set for 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 7-9 at City Hall, 6055 Main St. in Lula For those interested, the fee is $90.

Harrop, whose last day is today, had served in the city’s Post 4 seat since Jan. 1, 2012. His four-year term was set to end Dec. 31, 2015.

He is moving to Rhode Island in early June, where he and his wife have family. Discovering some months ago she had cancer, “she’s decided she wants to go home, and I have no problem with that,” he said.

Harrop has lived in Lula for a couple of periods, his last stint lasting about seven years. He moved to the northeast Hall County town originally from Florida to be closer to his wife’s sister, who lives in Alto.

“We figured it was as good a place to live as any,” he said.

Harrop soon got involved in community activities, including joining the Lula Historical Society. He is president of that organization.

A veteran, he also coordinated Memorial Day and Veterans Day programs in the Lula.

“It’s all been something to do, and I’ve enjoyed it,” Harrop said. “It was a good experience working with the people in Lula.”

He still plans to coordinate this year’s Memorial Day program.

“I’ve got to get that one under my belt,” Harrop said. “I just hope someone keeps it up after I leave.”

Leaving the city will be bittersweet, he said.

“But I’ll get involved in something up there — no doubt about it.”
