UNG faculty show off musical gifts

Professors to play free concert

POSTED: March 27, 2014 1:00 a.m.

Sounds of Frederic Chopin, Johannes Brahms and Sergei Prokofiev will waft through the air of Hoag Auditorium on the University of North Georgia’s Dahlonega as Joe Chapman pounds out the notes in a free piano concert Saturday night.

Chapman will be joined in the 8 p.m. concert by fellow UNG music faculty members, Carla Ganyard on violin and Esther Morgan-Ellis on cello in a presentation of Ludwig van Beethoven’s “Kakadu Variations.”

Chapman has served as director of piano studies at the University of North Georgia since 1983. He has toured extensively as a solo pianist and serves as conductor of the UNG Orchestra.

Ganyard attended UNG from 2007-2011 where she received numerous honors, including the coveted Dismukes Distinguished Musician Award in 2010. After graduation in 2011, she completed a master’s degree in music at the University of Georgia and returned to UNG as music faculty in 2013.

Morgan-Ellis joined the UNG music faculty in 2013, after completing her Ph.D. in musicology at Yale University. She has recently served as the host for a UNG Library film and discussion series on American music.
