Area concert benefits US veterans

15 musicians to perform in Gainesville

POSTED: March 27, 2014 1:00 a.m.

A concert benefitting the local Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17 will take place Saturday night at Riverside Military Academy in Gainesville.

The concert is expected to draw about 700 people and will feature a variety of music including classical, country and gospel. The 15 musicians range from local music students, one of whom is a 5-year-old violinist, to a professional concert pianist.

“There are people who can play and sing that are going to break your heart,” said Ken Brown, one of the concert’s organizers. “If you like music and you like entertainment, this is the place to be.”

This is the first time the DAV has held a concert, and organizers hope it will bring in donations as well as raise public awareness of the organization.

“The reason for this concert is to raise funds,” Brown said. “We want people of Hall County to know that there is a disabled veteran’s organization here, but we need their help to support veterans. You don’t have to be a veteran to donate a little bit.”

DAV Chapter 17 was founded in 1996 and focuses solely on veterans and their families in Northeast Georgia. The chapter receives no government funding and is dependent on donations and volunteers. During the last fiscal year, Chapter 17 spent $27,500, about 97 percent of its total funds, on assisting local veterans.

“We help with gas and electric bills and food – that kind of thing,” said chapter Commander Sam Smith. “All the funds that we raise go to help veterans and their families locally.”

In addition, the chapter provides scholarships for children of veterans and transportation to the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Decatur.

The concert is free, though donations will be accepted, and will take place at Riverside Military Academy’s Carlos and Sandra Cervantes Theatre for the Arts, at 2001 Riverside Drive in Gainesville. Doors open at 5 p.m. and the concert begins at 6 p.m. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
