Lane of Clarks Bridge Road to be closed today

POSTED: March 25, 2014 11:53 p.m.

Flaggers will direct traffic across Clarks Bridge today as the northbound lane is closed for continuing work on a new bridge.

The lane closure is expected to begin at 9 a.m. and finish by 4 p.m., according to the Georgia Department of Transportation.

Workers will be pouring the fourth of 12 concrete caissons for the bridge that is set to be completed by Dec. 31, 2015.

The structure will span the Chattahoochee River portion of Lake Lanier and feature 12-foot-wide lanes and 8-foot-wide shoulders for cycling in either direction. The $8.7 million project also calls for a pedestrian tunnel under Clarks Bridge Road at the Lake Lanier Olympic Center.

The existing bridge was built in 1958 and does not meet current design standards.

The caisson being poured is among the four with the largest diameter at 6« feet. The size requires special cooling tubes to ensure the concrete cures to the needed strength, according to Harold Mull, DOT district construction engineer.

“Once cured, the cooling liquid will be removed and the tube voids filled with high-strength grout,” Mull said.
E.R. Snell Contractor Inc. of Snellville is contracted to do the work.
