Flowery Branch grad Newton named head coach in South Carolina

Flowery Branch and University of South Carolina grad Courtney Newton has been selected as the varsity girls basketball coach at Lexington High in Lexington, S.C., the school announced Friday.

Newton graduated with a bachelor’s degree in experimental psychology and an educational specialist degree in counselor education and currently serves as a Lexington High school counselor.

She was named to the All-State team during her senior year at Flowery Branch after averaging 24.6 points and 7.8 rebounds per game. At South Carolina, Newton earned a share of the school record for three-point field goal percentage in a game when she hit all five threes against Georgia in 2011.
