Crews are patching and cleaning up an area on the downtown square following a sinkhole repair made overnight.

The hole developed at the corner of Washington and Bradford streets after a sewer line collapsed Wednesday morning.

Gainesville Public Utilities crews filled the hole with dirt during the day and began work at 7 p.m. to fix the problem, which required they dig a hole about 20 feet by 20 feet to fix the sanitary sewer that is 12 feet deep.

City spokeswoman Catiel Felts said officials wanted to minimize daytime disruption to the busy downtown area.

Bradford from Washington to Brenau Avenue will remain closed until Friday, and detour signs are posted. Pedestrians can still access restaurants along that stretch of road.
